Serie A Weekend in Review: Giornata 1

Starting today, I’ll have a new article up after every gameday that covers how Italian players are doing in Serie A. This is an Italy blog so we should be keeping a careful eye on these players, no? It’ll focus on numbers and cover goals, cards, assists, and form, but I do need some help to really make this a great post.

Goals:

Mesto (Genoa): 1
Donati (Bari): 1
Moscardello (Chievo): 1
Pellissier (Chievo): 1
Ricchuiti (Catania): 1
Inzaghi (Milan): 1
Morrone (Parma): 1
Cassano (Sampdoria): 1
Guberti (Sampdoria): 1
D’Agostino (Fiorentina): 1

Overall, 15 goals were scored in Serie A this weekend, 10 of which were scored by Italians. Inter and Bologna still have yet to play, however, and they’ll play tomorrow. So far it’s been a cagey opening round in Serie A though, which is to be expected for the first weekend. Pato leads the goalscoring charts with 2, while 13 players follow him with one goal apiece. Cassano and D’Agostino are probably being watched closely by Prandelli, and Guberti is a good emerging contender on the wing.

Cards:

Blasi (Napoli): 1 yellow, 1 red

Blasi is the only Italian who got a red card this weekend. Quite a few others are on yellows, including Zanetti (Fior), Sculli (Genoa), and Pasquale (Udinese).

Best result:

So far, there are a few that stick out. Cesena kept Roma to a 0-0 draw, in a game where Antonioli made some absolutely fantastic save. Great result for Cesena, not so much for Roma. Bari were able to nick a win over a Juve side that’s very much in a rebuilding process, and Milan demolished Lecce 4-0.

——-

This will be a weekly post, as I said earlier, and is very much a work in progress. I’d love to have a lot of other information, such as assists, top saves, and most tackles, but I can’t find a website that logs that. Does anyone know of one? I’d also love any kind of feedback, including what else you’d like to see in this post.

But that is week one in review, minus Inter and Bologna. It’s great to see Serie A back in action once again.

Edit: Agiamba of the Juve Offside pointed me in the direction of a few more helpful sites. So here’s a few more statistics for you to chew on:

Highest Gate 47000 AC Milan v Lecce (edit: Juve-Bari had between 45k-50k as well)
Lowest Gate 11000 Chievo Verona v Catania
Average Attendance 26925
Aggregate Attendance 242328

There are plenty of stats about form and goals conceded and such, but that seems a little premature after one gameday.

I do watch that on some weeks but I was looking for a site so I could reference it in future posts.

  • Michel-Olivier

guberti is a good left winger, cesare should of call him.
    what happen to lippi?

  • Chris N

espn has a decent recap of stats. may take a day or two to see it all. right now they've only got the goal from genoa from friday's game.

  • Giuseppe Rosa Nero

Watch La Giostra del Gol. Simple as that. It's on RAI International every Sunday at 2:30 PM.

  • agiamba

Yes. Coming right afterwords is I Love Lucy.

  • Giovanni

    Ricchiuti is Argentinian.

  • Marco

I can't stand the new setup. Why did they have to change hosts

  • Marco

A Serie A wrap-up and no mention of Italy's biggest surprise in the smallest package? Sure Cassano played well and scored a penalty, but I think we should start talking about the Atomic Ant! Standing ovation and all… By the way, I don't think his performance today is a surprise to anyone who has had any idea of the talent this guy wields. Great Job Seba

  • http://italy.worldcupblog.org Julian

Born in Argentina but he's played in Serie A for long enough so that he's eligible to be an Oriundi. He's never been capped for Argentina before.

  • http://italy.worldcupblog.org Julian

Well he didn't score today and I couldn't find full stats on assists, so he wouldn't be listed above, but he indeed had a great day. I hope he keeps it up.

  • masonio

I found a website with assist stats, posted it already but it needs mod approval since I included the link, I think.

  • kurdt

Julian, you missed Giovinco. He had a good match against Brescia.

  • Mo_dudes

Sebastian Giovinco made an inspirational Parma debut.
Bravo Giovinco, I am counting on you to shine with the Azzurri.
Talking about my beloved Juve and their loss to Bari, and loss of Giovinco.

  • Mo_dudes

Marco my friend Giovinco will do wonders with Parma this season.

  • Mikederob

just tried to post a vid of the parma highlights…whats going on julian? are all links going to be checked now?

  • Gigi

Lets face it .. everyody knew Giovinco was going to shine once he got a chance somewhere. Everyone cept Juve management? Retards lol.

Week 1 was pretty uninspiring.. And now we got 2 lame internationals in the way to bore us all to death.

  • Marco

Understood, but at least a brief mention of Italy's next superstar! ;)

  • Marco

Is he your friend too? lol… I look forward to the day when the azzurri attack is

    Balotelli – Cassano – Giovinco
    Pazzini

That's going to be orgasmic. All we need behind them are capable CDM's not this DeRossi inconsistent babble. I also reckon Palombo is not an answer to the question as well. Me thinks we should keep an eye on D'Agostino!! Even Nocerino imo, he could have a break through year.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, until buffon recovers, if juventus keep playing the way they are, not a single italian should be selected from Juve, unless, their name begins and ends with Chiellini. Even Bonucci is showing some sloppiness. I think we'll see some gems this year, a lot of these teams look good…. Even on Cesena there's a speedy Italian there that was cutting through Roma … Ehhemmm DeRossi over the weekend.

  • Mikey P

Wasnt there more than 50,000 at the San Nicola yesterday?

  • http://italy.worldcupblog.org Julian

Not sure Mikederob. I'm still getting used to the Disqus comment system myself, and I never had to approve links before. Try posting the link again, and if it doesn't work I'll get in touch with Daryl. I just checked my interface and there are no links pending review.

  • http://italy.worldcupblog.org Julian

I got my stats from ESPN and they say it's Milan with the highest attendance. Where did you hear that about the San Nicola?

  • FrancescoItalyOffside

They announced it yesterday on tv. San Nicola was “tutto esaurito” (sold out)

  • masonio

Julian, I also posted a comment with a link and it said that it needed mod approval. I'll just post again without the link:

Assuming the stats on “the Score” website are accurate, Italian players had 9 assists:

    Giovinco (Parma) -1
    Gilardino (Fiorentina) – 1
    Ambrosini (AC Milan) – 1
    Pellissier (Chievo) – 1
    Lucarelli (Parma) – 1
    Capuano (Catania) – 1
    Dessena (Sampdoria) – 1
    Ranocchia (Genoa) – 1
    Dossena (Napoli) – 1

'Dinho and Alvarez picked up the other 2 assists for the first weekend.

  • masonio

ESPN match report for Bari – Juventus says 45 000 as well as “The hosts deserved their win for the courage and conviction they showed in front of almost 50,000 fans.”

  • http://italy.worldcupblog.org Julian

Sorry guys, the stats page on ESPN must've been wrong. I'll edit it now.

And I'm not sure what's up with the links issue. I just checked again and there's nothing pending approval from me. It sounds like a hitch in the system and I'll contact Daryl and try to figure it out.

  • rdj8

I heard a rumor saying cassano and marchisio wont be playing against estonie and faroe because of injurys…is that true?

  • Giuseppe Rosa Nero

You're not funny Aaron especially when I don't know what the fuck you're trying to get at.

  • Giuseppe Rosa Nero

Yea so is Miccoli. What's the word on Balotelli?

  • Mikey P

I can say with confidence that there were more than 50k at the game. asbari.it confirmed that there were less than 7,000 tickets available 2 days before game day. Capacity at S Nicola is 58k, so the simple math says there were 51,000 at least. Anyways, it sumantics, but whenever Bari can get their props, I will support that cause

  • masonio

I agree it definitely looked very near capacity. I left out the part where I meant to say that I don't think ESPN is that accurate.

  • jem

cigarini has been brought in to replace marchisio.

  • agiamba

    Shocking.

Point was La Giostra dei gol was made in the 1950s, and hasn't been updated since. Worthless.

  • miq

Could you post the address of that site here aswell, so everyone can enjoy the wonderfull world of stats..

  • http://twitter.com/stevenvanduyse Steven Van Duyse

    I guess you mean 'but he's played in Serie B, C, C2 and D for long enough'…
