Moratti Looks Inter Buying Pazzini, A Move This Author Wouldn’t Support
Giampaolo Pazzini, after a fantastic season with Sampdoria last year, has attracted the interest of quite a few clubs from around the peninsula. Juventus are usually the name linked with the hitman, but today, Inter’s Massimo Moratti has thrown his black-and-blue hat into the ring.
Inter President Massimo Moratti admits “we are looking to see if there’s a chance of signing Giampaolo Pazzini.”
The club confirmed it is seeking a reinforcement in attack during the January transfer window.
“Pazzini is a player we always look at with interest, because he has a lot of quality,” confessed Moratti at a business presentation in Milan.
“We are not convinced that we can sign him, but we are looking to see if there’s a chance of signing Pazzini.”
It would be a huge coup for the Nerazzurri, especially as Sampdoria hitman Pazzini has been repeatedly linked with rivals Juventus.
He is also an Italy international, so would increase the homegrown contingent in the squad.
“Leonardo has good sense when talking about transfer issues. He is very attentive and active in seeing what we can do to reinforce the squad.
“I will try to respond positively to his needs.”
In a word: NO. I’ve tried to give Inter the benefit of the doubt before, I truly have. I argued that Ranocchia signing for them could be a good thing, for example. But recently they’ve done little besides let young Italian talent rot. Santon sits on the bench, as does Andrea, despite the fact that both arguably deserve to start over who currently plays there- especially in the case of the center-back, whose path is blocked by Cordoba of all players.
For the record, I have nothing against Inter. Should fans desire this purchase because it means they have another attacking option, so be it. As a fan of the club, this would appear to be a great move, allowing Inter to have three quality players to play in a striker role. From an Italian lens focused on what’s best for players in relation to gli azzurri, however- this is a WorldCupBlog after all- this does not seem to be an ideal move. Pazzini should go to a squad where he can play week-in and week-out, and that simply isn’t guaranteed at Inter, especially given their track record.
Pazzini, in all likelihood, would be another Ranocchia. There’s no way he’s going to bench either Eto or Milito, and is just going to end up on the bench himself. Inter have not proven that they’re buying young Italian talent with any interest in playing them, and until that changes, I see little reason for this transfer.
