Maybe We’ll Never Understand Lippi
Just a few choice quotes from our great tactician:
I have the hope, I underline hope, to try and win the World Cup again. To do that I need to focus on the players with the most international experience and therefore the 2006 squad.
I received messages from Thiago Motta, Ledesma and Taddei about wanting to wear the Azzurri jersey. I thank them, but these are not roads that – for the moment – I intend to go down.
There are just some things that baffle me. I don’t understand how black holes work. I don’t think I’ll ever get why the Jonas Brothers are such a big band when their music is so horrendous. And why Lippi refuses to see what seems so obvious to us is another one of those good ol’ moments where I’m just left baffled.
Let’s look at the first quote. He wants to win the world cup… so he has to use the players that won it last time? Ignoring the effects of aging and discounting the merit that young talent can bring to the side? No one is doubting that we have guys with a ton of experience. On one hand, it’s hard to blame Lippi for wanting to stick with guys who have gone the full green mile and know how to win the world cup.
But I think that most of us feel that today’s game is played with a pace and vigor that most of our ‘06 guys can’t really match. Guys like Canna, Zambrotta, and Toni have the experience but are either too slow to too old. As we saw against Brazil and Egypt recently, teams that can play quick football seem to be our downfall. Furthermore, Lippi is ignoring one huge aspect here: the fact that these guys won it already. Are they going to be as motivated as players who really want to win the cup for the first time; players who really do have something to prove?
Lippi thinks that experience can overcome that, and for our sake, he better be right- though it’s hard to see how he could be.
As for the second quote, well, we talked about the Oriundi a short time ago, and Lippi’s stance now seems to be: mostly no. Camo, yes; Amauri, maybe; but anyone else, get back to Brazil/Argentina/your birth country.

Maybe we understand Lippi, maybe we know that he has lost his marbles and maybe we should drag him down from the high horse that he rode from Berlin to Rome.

hasn’t he learnt anything from the confeds? one f the worst italy performances i think i’ve ever seen. what a shame he’s being so pig headed. 2010 could could be such an exiting and amazing tournament for us if we had someone making the right choices

I bet Bearzot thought the same thing in 1986. And it got us nowhere! Wake up man!

Gattuso should be on the squad hes a warrior and will be back in form for milan..so should camo, canna, grosso, pirlo if this is what he means by old players then its ok by me.

I love me my ‘06 squad, but they were the oldest team then. Let them bow out of the world stage while they are still on top.
We do need an infusion of youth to stand a chance against these young whipper-snappers.
Another WC repeat would be A-MAZING, but sadly, something’s got to change for that to be a reality. (going to watch the final again now to relive the glory days…)

The final was not Italy’s best performance. The semi-final against Germany was epic. I still remember Canna’s tackle from the back which left all German players fuming because even though it was a tackle from behind it was completely fair.

Rahul- agreed entirely. The Germany-Italy game was the match of the World Cup in my eyes. I’ve never seen a 0-0 draw played with such ferocity and attacking intent. You could tell we didn’t want to go to penalties, and luckily, we didn’t have to.
Though the next game we played after that proved that we do well on penalties every once in a while.

lippi need to inject some young blood to the team. is this line come from lippi?
`To do that I need to focus on the players with the most international experience and therefore the 2006 squad.’
well, if that so.If italy won 2010 world cup with 2006 member, will he bring the same team to 2014
yes, it’s true that experience play a major role when we go into big tournament but he need to give more younger player a chance.

I do understand one thing which is Lippi is not the right man to be the head coach of the national team of Italia. I do not doubt his abilities, he orchestrated the team to win the World Cup which is an achievement, but let us be realistic here two important reasons got the team to win the World Cup; one the players physical condition allowed them to demostrate good performance, two is the unity of the players and the hunger among themselves to win a major trophy. In todays football and I believe Mr. Lippi knows better two things you count on to form a squad young talented players full of energy and in excellent physical condition in addition to experienced players. A mix of this and that. Not depending on VETERANS. It is a sad sad story for Italia to see such a coach planning to destroy Italy’s image at next World Cup if we qualify. If you ask me since Lippi will depend as he says on 2006 squad I really would rather think it is better for Italia not to qualify in order to avoid another humilation just like what happened in Confederations Cup. It was a total disaster for Italy’s football to loose from Egypt and Brazil and I for one do not want to see that happening again even if it cost us the qualification to WC. To me Lippi is not the right man and we really need a coach to change the squad.
