Call Ups for the Greece Friendly Announced
We’ve got a friendly away in Greece on this upcoming Wednesday. Lippi announced the boys that will be rep’in Italy:
GK: Curci (Siena), De Sanctis (Galatasaray)
Defenders: Bonera (Milan), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Chiellini (Juventus), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Lyon), Legrottaglie (Juventus)
Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), D’Agostino (Udinese), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Maggio (Napoli), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Perrotta (Roma)
Forwards: Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Pepe (Udinese), Quagliarella (Udinese), Rossi (Villarreal), Toni (Bayern Munich)
This is from channel4, and right off the bat I noticed something is off. Did Lippi really only call up 2 goalies and not Amelia? I thought it was probably an omission on Channel 4’s part… but goal.com is saying the same thing. I guess Lippi wants to try out Curci/De Sanctis, but if this friendly was about trying different goalkeepers, why not throw Abbiati in there? In any case, if he really did leave out Amelia, I hope that means he wants to give Curci a shot. He’s been solid for Siena and he’s pretty young, and we have to find someone to replace Buffon (eventually)
Other than that, it’s a pretty predictable call up. Most of these guys were called up before- the only new face is D’Agostino, and once Pirlo is back I expect him to be dropped again. No Cassano or ADP, but again, that was to be expected. Zambro is out but I think he’s injured, and ditto for Aqui.
So Toni, Camo, and Iaquinta are back in, while Buffon, Pirlo, Aqui and Christmas are all out injured.

Didn’t know about the injury alessio, thanks for clarifying that. Makes sense then that he wasn’t called up.
I’m ok with these call ups. I want more younger guys but Lippi seems to want to integrate them slowly over time. He’s not going to call up 5 new guys just for this and ruin the balance of the team. It’ll happen before WC 2010- youth will be integrated, albeit a bit more slowly than I would like. Lippi wants to make sure the flow and balance of the team isn’t ruined. You can’t just throw out 5 new uncapped players and expect everything to gel

Julian following players are injured:
Buffon, Pirlo, Aqui, Toto, Amelia, Zambro

how can he leave out Cassano????????????????
Posted from Spain
———
I think u need to read his book……..first….I am sure you will find the answer there.

I think we’re going to have to accept that Lippi just isn’t going to call up certain players, namely Panuch and Cassano. I don’t understand why given their current form, and especially considering how young Cassano is, but it looks really unlikely that he’s going to give them a shot. Hopefully, Cassano will have a breakout year and score a lot of goals and make himself un-ignorable.

Where’s Brighi, Lippi? Definately deserves a call-up instead of useless Perrotta.

Denmark

kqql, is Cassano’s book out yet?

tell that again Caroe..tell that again!!roma r doing very bad, but brighi is the best player they have on the park this season, why? he is real quality..the display he put forth against chelsea was just stupendous but will the old, egoisitic, genius(yes yes yes) Lippi pay heed ???

Brighi? I said the same thing about Tiago……..two weeks of good form doesn’t mean a call up to the Nazionale.

I’m with alessio on this. If Brighi keeps playing at this level for the rest of the season, then we should give him a shot on the Azzurri. But we can’t call him up because he had a good 3 months.
Look at Maggio. He was stellar all last year and finally got a call up a few months ago.

United States

All I’m saying is don’t call up Perrotta.
There’s no point.
If not Brighi (who I think they should call up) then call up Palombo or someone in that mold. Cassano and possibly even Rosina must be called up soon.

I would’ve liked to see Cassano called up. But he is still young and i’m sure he will have plenty of chances to be called up. But as always I will be watching my boy DDR.

Gaetano D’Agostino’s call-up is much deserved and long overdue. He has been one of the top central midfielders in Serie A so far this season and the key to Udinese’s success. He dictates the play and his long passing is sublime. Very good sub for Pirlo in my opinion.

and his long passing is sublime.
I guess that means Toni’s position on the team is secure…

hahahaha…good one Alessio. In all seriousness though D’agostino is a great player. One of the most technically gifted midfielders in Serie A for sure. As Tim Vickery would say “lovely left foot on him”

Cassano’s not THAT young…
27? I mean, I’d say play him now…
He’s not getting any younger.
And this is the prime of his physique (People often say 27 is when you peak as a player)

Yeah but players like Cassano tend to be pretty ageless. He doesn’t rely on his physicality, just his skill. Look at ADP. 34 years old and he’s been in the best form of his life for the past year, barring when he was just starting out. Totti and other fantastias can play for much longer than say guys like Gattuso who rely on their legs.
Though I agree- he should be played.

D’agostino’s insertion is just about only thing I like about this call-up.
Ancora Cannavaro! I wonder when it will be Lippi stop ass-kissing him and start a real investment on the younger generation defenders? Let’s face it, Canna’s career is heading downhill and he’s field days are numbered. He can stay in Azzurri to provide the team with his leadership and give advices to the youngsters, but as a regular starter hell no.
Pepe. You gotta be kidding me, right? Why all the sudden are ppl making such a big deal of him? Guy can’t beat a man on run! Perotta, I’m not even gonna start on that one.

Lippi makes some weird selections..(remember Barone??that was a joke in the world cup 2006 squad)..pepe is a decent player but definately not azzurri material!!he cant even dribble..Zoff did a great act when he played Del vecchhio who was very succesful as a wide out left striker in euro 2000..donadoni discovered DiNatale, who is definately talented and has scored vital goals..Toni was LippiĀ“s master stroke..But persisting with perrotta, selecting Pepe and ignoring Cassano, pannucci.is just not on..Iaquinta doesnt get a starting role with Juve, but honestly, he can be a very effective sub deep in the second half, he can drag the defenders wide out( ala Delvecchhio…) Canna will go don as an Azzurri legend, the first defender to have won golden ball, 2006 was the zenith for him, sadly, he is blocking the place for a young one to be groomed, even Legra is more solid and composure personified then Canna of today..
but then, players like gattusso and Zambrotta have rediscovered their forms and r playing the best football of their careers, so nothing wrong in persisting with them!!When the artist from Brescia, Pirlo gets back soon, i will be a relieved man..

just happened to find this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQaX2xanpYU
we have a legend in this player!!mark my words!!after 10 years from now, this bloke will be spoken on the same lengths as of baggio, Del Piero, Totti…

Julian – I’m going to implore you to do this for me because I don’t have the time myself, but dig up the list of Azzurri that Lippi called up for his first game this generation, and make your next blog-post a comparison between that list and the current one (include the age of the various players). That ought to show exactly what some people here seem not to get: we ARE getting a generation change, but it’s coming over SLOWLY. Just look at that list! Midfield and offence *put together* count a grand total of FOUR players who have reached age 30!
I’m sorry to be asking for blog entries by topic – I’m no little prince and I’ll understand if you decide not to discuss the subject. I’m just so tired of reading idiots going apeshit because Lippi has gone “mad.” The guy hasn’t lost a game since 2005.

Requests for Lippi:
Don’t play Legro, Camo, or Chiellini.
Feel free to give Vincenzo a full 90. God knows he needs it.

9 champs league- I really think Rossi could be the best striker Italy’s produced since Baggio. He’s so young and so skilled already. I hope he can stay as a starter on Villareal, because him and the team can contribute so much to each other. He’s at a great team, though I’d love for him to come back to Italy
John Silver- excellent idea. I have the next week’s worth of posts already planned out, but remind me again sometime next week and I’ll look into that

Yes, and the other party of idiots were saying pretty much the same thing during the era of Don defending his picks. Look how well that turned out.
