Call ups, Call ups, and More…Call ups
Lippicakes was very busy today, and released not one but two lists of call ups. The first is for the players to participate in a friendly against North Ireland on June 6th. Those players are:
Goalkeepers: De Sanctis (Galatasaray), Marchetti (Cagliari);
Defenders: Cassani (Palermo), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Olympique Lyonnais), Esposito (Lecce), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Santon (Inter);
Midfielders: Biagianti (Catania), Brighi (Roma), D’Agostino (Udinese), Galloppa (Siena), Gattuso (Milan), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Palombo (Sampdoria);
Forwards: Foggia (Lazio), Mascara (Catania), Pazzini (Sampdoria), Pellissier (Chievo), Rossi (Villarreal).
A ton of new faces, like Lippi had promised. Can’t really complain or praise this though because it’s merely a friendly. I’m sure these guys will play thier hearts out to impress Lippi, but he seems quite stubborn.
How so? Oh I’m glad you asked. Here’s a list of at least some of the players who will go to the Confederations’ Cup:
Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Palermo);
Defenders: Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Chiellini (Juventus), Zambrotta (Milan);
Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Pepe (Udinese), Pirlo (Milan);
Forwards: Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Quagliarella (Udinese), Toni (Bayern Munich).
A list so predictable that if Lippi stays like this, I won’t even have to blog anymore. His unexplainable man crush on Pepe continues, and everyone else well we’ve known for quite some years now. No Cassano, but again, this was easy to tell from the get go. This is only part of the list, though, so there’s still hope…

You’re right, Camo hasnt played for most of the season. But he doesnt need to, because when he does play, he’s usually phenomenal. Question, how can you say Camo doesnt deserve a starting spot but Pirlo does, when Camo was clearly the better when they collided recently in the Juve-Milan match, so much better even that Pirlo and others such as Zambro had to gang up on Camo.
Gattuso too, even though he’s been injured for a large amount of time and just getting back now, if we see him back on the form he was in pre-injury against Fiorentina this weekend, then i say call him up and make him a starter with the others.
Also, i think Del Piero should be called up without a doubt. When he’s on form with a coach he likes, he’s one of the best italian strikers in the world. Just look at the first half of the season when he was actually happy with Ranieri, he was scaring the shit out of defenses with his partnership with Amauri, and with his spectacular free-kicks.

In my opinion Motta is still a bit to raw to step in the Starting XI today. I’m not saying he can’t/won’t be ready in SA next summer, but if the WC were to start tomorrow I wouldn’t be completely comfortable with him in there.

Motta is good, but Maggio is the best right back we have available for sure. 27 years old so still has plenty of years ahead of him, and probably the best right back in Serie A only after Maicon. Lippi would be making a huge mistake if he doesnt call up and start Maggio.

PSknights- thats my exact same line-up right there. it would work well.

Okay so let me get this straight, swineboy. You first claimed to be from frosinone (even though you had no clue how to spell it). Then you were ‘toscano’ ( I guess because that was a few more degrees of latitude to the north, making your hatred for ’southerners’ justifiable in your shit infested cranium). Now you are perugino. You do know they are famous for their chocolate, right? You know what colour chocolate is,right? That must be pretty troubling for you. So are we to expect you to declare your next ‘birthplace’ to be treviso? Why stop there when you can go further north? I heard rijkiavek is looking for a new village idiot.

to the raacist, dumb fuck who thinks he is Italian …
1. if you want to pretend to be an Italian and not a briitish ex-pat holed up in Spain, learn how to write proper Italian
2. the Garibaldi, who unified ‘your’ Italy, was a Sardinian from the house of savoy born iin France; that qualifiies him as a ’southerner’, as defined by your lega nord racist compatriots – larn your history, indeed.
3. while Sicily was overrun by Vandals, your friendly little Perugia was getting fucked up the kiester by the ostragoths (and visigoths), so, unless your relatives were so ugly that they took it up the backside and thus did not procreate, it is most likely that even Perugia has a bit of mixed blood. shouldn’t complain, afterall, Turin (Piedmonts) are almost French and Milan (Lombards)are basically German. you can’t really think that is the real Italy. Sicily was founded by the Greeks, and before your ancestors knew how to eat with utensils Sicily, had produced a number of renowned philosophers and mathematicians. i think you guys in Perugia are famouos for chocolate? maybe if you got out of your little Spanish hut you could take a trip to Sicly and learn something, you utterly ignorant putz.

the problem is with the formation, not the players. Camo iis great, but the 4-3-3 sucks. we have no width and he runs around in circles like a chicken without a head.
Motta – Cannavaro – Chiellini – Grosso
——De Rossi —— Brighi ———
DiNatale ——Pirlo——Quagliarella
————–Balotelli—————
DeRossi and Brighi provide ball wining skills with pace and hustle
Pirlo is absolutely valuable for his vision annd passing conneectivity and should sit just slightly behind the to wingers in a sort of deeep 3/4ista role
i am only saying diNatale because he hustles, can move the ball, wins balls, and can shoot. i would prefer soomeeone who could supply better service to the point. suggestions? – replace him with who you want
i think Quagliarella is fantastic and the most creative annd versitile player in Italy
and i am only say Balotelli, even though think it is too early for him to play international, because he is really onee of the best talents i have seen. Del Piro could be used, maybe Iaquinta, especially against very physical opponents, but even Pazzini, Floccari, Corradi, Miccoli and DiVaio might be good in the front spot.
any suggestions?

Armando, stay off the strong substances. Del Piero is a machine because he takes all the penalties and free kicks. Even though Giovinco is far superior imo. Not only that but he scores against teams like Siena. Alright fair enough. But be honest with yourself buddy. Against competative teams, he gets the ball taken away from him from behind, example, Against Chelsea. IMO Juventus were superior to that team when they went with the younger options.
Listen, when you watch the azzurri against teams like the Neatherlands, Brazil, Romania, Spain, maybe even france had they not gone a man down 10 minutes into that game. You see they are in desperate need of retooling the brand. They are slow and they are cocky. Age has ravaged this team and now people like you Armando, are trying to hang to each of these players like grim death. Have we forgotten that they have been uncompetative with these slow, old, cocky players against teams like Ireland, Montenegro, Cyprus? This is a team that is not competative, and has the cockiness of Cannavaro as captain. They will NOT go anywhere with this state of mind, they will NOT win the confed cup and they will NOT qualify for the world cup. It is our destiny to be humilated I fear, not for anything, but I think Lippi is actually pulling for full humiliation.
For everyone that supports these old farts on my national team let me tell you. Stop dreaming, wake up, drink some coffee. Even Maldini was BOOED when he did his victory lap, that should tell you what every Italian feels. We don’t care who the fuck you are, or where your from, but at the end of the day, if you serve your self and not the team we will rip off your head.

Listen, when you watch the azzurri against teams like the Neatherlands, Brazil, Romania, Spain, maybe even france had they not gone a man down 10 minutes into that game.
And how many world cups do all those teams have… (Save Brazil) How many of them ended up with silverware at the Euros? One.
Even Maldini was BOOED when he did his victory lap, that should tell you what every Italian feels. We don’t care who the fuck you are, or where your from, but at the end of the day, if you serve your self and not the team we will rip off your head.
Do you think the last sentence is actually true about Maldini? That doesn’t tell shit about Italians. You know what that trashy demonstration showed? That there are assholes everywhere, and there will always be someone who would shit on Mother Teresa’s grave.

just as iam posting this, iam watching the Milan-Fiorentina match..disgusting antics from Gilardino, goes down like being shot on a slight touch by Favalli, begs for a penalty..no wonder, if we play him for our nationa team, he will get carded for the antics…he is useless, just waits for a loose ball ….

Alessio, really, how can you compare an over paid 40 year old who should have retired 4 years ago, to a woman who gave up her worldly possessions to help the sick? That’s all I will say about such an uneducated, inconsiderate, un ethical, poorly thought out comment.
9 Champs leagues, that is some racist venom your spewing. I haven’t been paying any attention to these comments in the past, but knock it off, this is a soccer forum, those kind of words don’t belong here.
The problem with the mentality right now are what many people are currently doing. Their looking to the past. Well, how many times did Ireland win? We have 4 world cups so we know how to do it. The fact of the matter is, yes your past got us here, but the question is what can we use from the past, take from the present and how can we move forward in the most successful manner. All I need to do is say we won the world cup in 1982 in a ‘convincing fashion’. We didn’t adapt to modern times and were embarrased with out old men for the next 4 or 5 years. Why not this time do things differently. Why not adapt. I mean we have had more than enough games to see that this team simply doesnt work. That these old players, are now indeed too old and need to go. Yet, we continue to sit on them like we’re addicted to meth. We should be working with and nurturing our young guys. For instance, im watching Juve and Lazio today. SOmeone tell me why Marchisio isnt on the national team. Or for that fact Marchionni who did a great job this season? Legro has made blunder after blunder today and yet he is on the team. Foggia has continued to send ill advised, ill timed crosses and looks very off colour so why did he get selected? If lippi was to explain some of these decisions I would feel better. But they just seem pig headed. I dread not getting to south africa 2010. Don’t you think us italians have dealt with enough humiliation. Yes we have won 4 world cups, but how many world cups have we been laughed at? How many seasons have we been considered third rate? How often is our calcio critisized by outsiders for being unattractive, old, and slow? I really think the world cup 2006 was and should have been considered a stepping stone, not a one off.
About the old guys on this team. Listen, when del piero is running with the ball and gets picked off from behind. He doesnt deserve to be on the national team. Del piero has played in 98,00,02,04,06,08 tournaments and has had marginal impact. At 34 years old, do you really think he has had a mental epiphany and will save us against brazil or argentina?
Luca toni played in 06,08. He was not only the preferred striker for the two teams he was also the only person to receive any service in Euro 08. He has two goals to his name against the Ukraine and that’s it. Does he really deserve another shot at 32 years old? He cannot run, he cannot dribble, he cannot complete a pass. you tell me.
Cannavaro is coming off 2 horrid seasons at real madrid. He didn’t play in 08, however, he played in 98,00,02,04,06. Of those I think only 06 stand out. He is on his way to Juventus which means he will be playing at the 2010 world cup if Lippi is incharge. He will be 37 years old. Why does he continue to deserve a shot at the national level? Because of how he played in 06? or because of how he has been playing the last two years?
This can go on and on and on… It’s arrogant and ill-advised presumption that someone would believe these players are going to be in their 06′ form come the confederation cup or the 2010 world cup. I don’t see any changes on this team coming any time soon and that is scary. Although the supporting cast is constantly changing the main characters remain the same. Lippi isn’t willing to change anything and for those of you who think thats a good thing your saddly mistaken. I don’t know how many world cup qualifiers, confed cups, and friendlies need to happen before you realize, we are old, un creative, slow, and cocky. That in itself is a horrible cocktail to win a 2010 world cup.

it must be because you are living in a cave in Spain (were you exiled because your fellow Italians did not want a racst fuck like you to live in their country) that you remain so ignorant. i forgot, you are a pasty white british ex-pat.
it is pointless to showw you your “italian” suck and you have no knowledge of history whatsoever since you cannot even undrestand what ii said.
1. Sicily spoke dialect just like your so-called Perugian ancestors spoke dialect, but they speak better italian in Sicily than anywhere else Italy today. language alone does not make one Italian, jack-ass, since there was no formal italian language until the early 20th c. and the italian language today is largely based on Spanish gramatical reconfiguration by the hapsburgs in the 19th c.
2. Sicily was not part of Italy until 1861 becacuse there was no Italy before this, asshole. the unification was in 1861, by Garabaldi, a southerner.
3. Italians in america are also from the north, the largest saint-day celebration iin Boston, just for example, is St. Anthony – he was from Padova (north) where many of the boston immigrants come from.
4. i know there is no sense in trying to teach a stupid duchebag like you anythinig, but if you want to pretend to bee italian, you could be more convincing if you knew some things.
5. there is no way someone as stupid as you could actually be Italian. there is no italian i have ever met as plaiin fucking dumb as you.
so fuck off you shit-for-brains pasty white italian-wannnabe. one can only hope that being stuck in that cave will prevent you from ever reproducing
JUSTIN: can you please get this nut-rag banned from postining. it is really offensive and a waste of space

JULIAN – if you can do anything about it can you get porchetta, aka 9 champion leagues, banned?
justin and Chris did it for other pages. it is jusst offensive and against the posting policies of this site.

Marco, dont insult me first of all. And since when was it “your” national team? Since when did you run the show? I’m not trying to start a huge argument over this, but dont act like your the boss.
And Del Piero is a flop against big teams? Actually, no, not at all. Siena’s home form is great, theyve only lost a few times this year, and we stomped them thanks to Marchisio and ADP mostly. He also single-handedly destroyed Real Madrid, and was a big part of both the beatings we gave Roma this season. First off, we played Chelsea at a bad time, during a rough patch. But while ADP may have been quiet alot, not seeing much of the ball, when he did see the ball the Chelsea players were ganging up on him to get the ball. I know this because i remember posting about how they couldnt get the ball off him without fouling him and/or ganging up on him. Giovinco is a great talent, but he cant fill ADP’s shoes just yet, and that’s if he’s ever able to, because most players in the world would fail trying to fill ADP’s shoes, between his awesome career and still, at almost 35, being world-class, those are some huge shoes to fill.
And btw, Del Piero takes all the free kicks because he’s the best at them, one of the best in the world even, and when on form possibly THE best. If you dont believe me, ask Casillas, Doni, or Curci who’ve experienced his free kicks first-hand.
About Maldini, that was a disgrace, and it’s only a handful of stupid Milan fans that acted like that, much less all italians. Maldini is a legend who deserves to be playing for Milan, and that was assinine by the “fans”. If you believe that all italians are like that then you have a very warped view of italians.
And about France, Spain, etc, other than Brazil, Italy has the most World Cup wins for a reason. How many do the Netherlands, Romania, or Spain have? I’ll tell you, none. End of story right there. So this year Spain might have a stronger side than us and might beat us. It’s really not that big of a deal, considering they have arguably the strongest side in the world. France is actually the one thats having problems qualifying for the World Cup btw, and i dont think any of those other teams you mentioned will beat us on the big stage, maybe Spain, but the Netherlands or Romania? No way. And gimme a break about Cyprus and the others recently, were going through a bit of a rough patch, not a huge deal, we’ll perform on the big stage. To be honest, i dont expect us to win the World Cup or the Confederations Cup for that matter, but there’s no way we’re gonna be embarassed.
Now, onto the rest of the team, yea we need to bring in some youth, for example i dont agree with starting Cannavaro, but i do believe he deserves a call up, and if his form improves for Juve then i think he could quite possibly fight the starting spot against the frontrunner who i believe is Santacroce (Chiellini has an automatic spot), and/or Legro. But you cant completely revamp a team like this, especially when although some of our players are aging, like Camo(31), ADP(34), etc, they are still world class. Camoranesi is without a doubt our best winger in my opinion and when on form our 2nd best midfielder overall only after De Rossi. Remember the Milan game, where he tore apart Pirlo and Zambro? I guess you forgot that. And ADP when on form terrorized defenses throughout the second half of the season, including pretty much single-handedly taking down Real Madrid, and he seems to finally be getting back to that form now somewhat. He definitely deserves a callup, and possibly a starting position if Lippi leaves out Cassano as usual. Who else do you have problems with?
In fact, i would like to see your ideal starting 11 (and callups too if you want). Go ahead, show it to me, i want to see it.

To finish off that second to last paragraph btw, im just meaning to say that we need to integrate youth into the team, but we cant completely mak up the team of youngsters, as that wouldnt work. Right now for example, other than maybe D’Agostino, there’s no one that could take away Pirlo or Camo’s spots in the midfield on the starting lineup in my opinion, and D’Agostino is a different type of midfielder than them anyways. Foggia’s good too, and is a winger like Camo (though Foggia’s a left winger and Camo’s a right winger) but he’s only been called up a few times, and the World Cup is a big place to start, and an easy place to buckle under the pressure, which we need to be careful of. We need to put together a team of youth and experience. De Rossi, Chiellini, Santacroce, Maggio, D’Agostino, Rossi, Pazzini and possibly even Marchisio and Cassano (if Lippi calls them) could all be starters as far as i’m concerned, and theyre all relatively young. Then we just have Grosso(31), Buffon(31), Gattuso(31), Camoranesi(31), Pirlo(29), and possibly ADP(34) and Cannavaro(35). And in Buffon’s case, 31 isnt really all that old for a keeper. Many keepers keep going till their 40. So explain to me how having half the team (or more) below or around 25 makes us an old squad, cause it doesnt add up to me.

Armando, your going in circles, look at my last post to counter many of your remarks. However, It is good that we do see eye to eye on many things.
About Buffon, I never said he was too old to play for the national team. I agree with you Buffon has many years ahead of him. Furthermore, Grosso, Gattuso, and Pirlo are all welcome on ‘MY’ naitonal team. Im sorry, but I am the boss;)
I take it your a huge del piero fan, I was until I saw some very disappointing behaviour from him. I think his time has passed. Also, I never said he was a big match flop. He is a National Team Flop. He doesn’t deserve another shot.
Also, Armando, I mean this in a very polite manner. But just because we have won before does not tell us we are doing things right this time around. Cause we are not. We are actually dangerously close to 1. not only repeating history, but 2. Creating one for the history books in being the first country to win a world cup, not qualify for the next world cup.

Sorry, it just seemed like you were being rude. My bad if i misunderstood. Yes i’m an ADP fan, but i wouldnt put him on if he didnt deserve it in my opinion. How is he a national team flop? I dont really remember the Euro too well, but he was great in the 06 WC, for example scoring against Germany and putting away his penalty in the final. He’s tied with ROBERTO BAGGIO for Italy national team goals, 4th place, and not far from 1rst, and if he’s given a chance he might be able to reach it. Sorry, but being tied with Baggio, someone who basically carried the Italy attack by himself for years, is not being a national team flop at all.
Also, we’ll qualify easily for the World Cup, there’s no way we’d get embarassed. Even Spain, the arguably best team in the world, had ALOT of trouble with us in the Euro, and only won on penalties, which is all luck and keeper reflexes, nothing more (even though i think Spain is better than us at the moment/at the Euros). So we are obviously still doing something right, and dont need as many changes as you’re making it seem. How does Pirlo for example deserve a starting spot, when Camoranesi doesnt, even though Camo was clearly shown to be the better in their head-to-head encounter just a few weeks ago. Camo also provides a style of play that is harder to find, whereas Pirlo could be replaced by Marchisio or D’Agostino for example (though i still think Pirlo is a starter), and Gattuso is not needed as much anymore with De Rossi available. Basically, we need to look to the future for some bright talents, but also need to look to the past to see who we can rely on, and Camo is one of those who we can rely on, as well as ADP, and to a point Cannavaro too (though i think Santacroce should be starting alongside Chiellini ahead of Canna, and Cassano most likely before ADP). Toni is also somewhat reliable, and i think he should be called up as he’s still good, though certainly not starting XI quality anymore.
Plus, like i said before, look at my last posts, and you’ll see that we do have a good amount of young players, including half, or more, of the starting XI that i think should be fielded.
And do you honestly think MARCHIONNI should be starting in front of Camo, or at least be higher up in the pecking order? That’s ridiculous. Foggia’s better than Marchionni most likely, and Camoranesi is better than either of them. Foggia and Marchionni are great too and i wouldnt mind seeing them called up, but not starting, especially not in front of Camo. And i agree with you that Marchisio deserves at the very least to be called up, give it a few years and he’ll possibly even be on the level Xavi has been on this season (INCREDIBLE, for those of you who dont know how well Xavi has done this year for Spain and especially Barcelona).

And do you mean Paolo Maldini by that “overpaid 40 year old…”?? That’s ridiculous, he deserves to have kept playing this long, as well as as long as he would want if he would want to keep going. And considering his age, he’s still actually very good, Milan’s best defendr this season for sure, and while that’s not saying much comparing him to Favalli, Senderos, etc, Maldini is still quality. He’s a legend, and also deserves a farewell match by the way.

is this our national team, boooooooo where are the world class players I mean why the hell are these players playing

im american, (unfortunately) but i am half italian on both sides, most of which is from Scafati, which is outside of Pompeii. They have a team called scafatese in the second-from-bottom teir, or something, although i do not know if they have good chocolate there. i suppose im not really italian, but i still support the azzurri. (and USMNT, cant wait until June 15) You dont have to be borm in italy, or live in italy, to be a fan of the best national team in the world.
