Undeniably, World Champions.

July 9th, 2006 | By: Jay | 188 Comments »

It takes seven solid matches -four knock-out round victories- and some luck to win a World Cup. People can whinge and moan all they want, but at the end of the day it was Italy who did the business this time around. I won’t say it was the prettiest of Cups, maybe not even the most memorable, but it counts and WOW must it feel good to be sitting outside the Duomo in Milano right about now. I’ll have more thoughts tomorrow, but tonight let me ask you this…

- Did you really ever imagine that Zizou, Henry and Viera would be off the pitch when the match was decided?
- Could you have possibly believed that Grosso would have a larger impact on the tournament than Totti?
- Trezeguet, so closely tied to the history of Italian football, could you have guessed that he would ‘gack’ on his PK?!

Finally, before you all depart of higher ground, I want you to give a round of applause to Bob and the staff at Bootsnall for providing a festive, unique blogspot worthy of a World Cup and free of corporate influence. And cheers to those who made this site a success. Some of you have been here since January; others just for a few weeks. Makes no difference…the site wouldn’t work without your discussion.

How you can say that Italy didn’t deserve the world cup, France had big difficulty to pass the first round. Moreover France has been totally dominated against portugueses (ball possession 59%, 41% for France)they were totally KO.I don’t speak about the stolen penalty !!!
This weak passage Italian had it during the final,it’s normal.
The italian team worth, you saw it during all the tournament and specially against Germany(one of the biggest Team of this world cup.

I am an Italian growing up in Australia. I was born here in Australia, but my heart was with Italia all the way! Even against Australia, I couldn’t bare the thought of Italia losing. The last time Australia made the World Cup I wasn’t even born, so I’ve always backed Italia. This is why my passion for them is stronger!

I haven’t read all of the messages above, but I get the general idea – there are a bunch of sore losers trying to destroy this pivotal moment in Italian Football and there are those trying to justify their win. My Italian friends, don’t try to justify their win to these crying winging losers, all that matters is ITALIA have won the World Cup and no-one can take that away from us!!! FORZA AZZURRI!!!!

Hi Marz I’m very happy you didn’t forget your italian blood. I came in france when I was two years old. And now My children support also Italian Team.
I’ ve read that a young player that was born in USA chose also the Italian Nationnality because he want to play with Italian Team. His name is Giuseppe Rossi and he play with Manchester United. He’s 19 years old and last wednesday he played with the italian Under 21 for the first time. In 20 minutes of play he impressed all the Italian staff. Do someone know this player?

Sorry I haven’t heard of Giuseppe Rossi, but i’ll look out for him in the premier league. Italy’s under 21 team is very successful, so if he makes the team it will be a great achievement.
I am also a dual citizen of Australia and Italy. I would love to live there for a while, but i’m not so sure there’s a lot of work for me – my Italian language is not so great. I’m an engineer here in Australia and I think it will be difficult to get work as an engineer in Italy if my Italian is not perfect. Do you know, are there English speaking companies in Italy?

A little off the subject, did anyone see the MotoGP on the weekend? Loris Capirossi 1st on the Ducati, Valentino Rossi 2nd. Another great win for Italy!!!

Italia campione del Mondo per la quarta volta!!!

Fratelli d’Italia,
l’Italia s’è desta,
dell’elmo di Scipio
s’è cinta la testa.
Dov’è la vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
che schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.

Its was one of the greatest days in my live I’ve avaited 24 years!
With best wishes for future from TBILISI, GEORGIA

I thought they were brilliant. It took some heart stopping moments for them to win. Once England were out I backed them. to win because they were so cool under pressure. Ok there was a bit of off-humor taunting involved but they still stayed so calm. Pure style.

Italy TRUE champions

only conceded 2 goals (own goal and penalty) best defensive record in the history of world cups ever.
unbeaten in 26 games, 10 different goal scoreres, knocked out germans in there back yard (dortmund) in which they have never lost an interntonal match there, bufon lev yashin award, cannovaro and pirlo silver and bronze ball awards.
and now 4 world cup titles?

Yes they are worthy world champions!

Italy lost to france in the euro qualifiers, 3-1, france playing without zidane what a shame! this certainly proves where they stand as a team at an international level, and how their (or rather materazzi’s) cheap tricks, predominant through out the world cup was the primary cause for their victory! italy only had one good game and that was against germany, the whole world knows who was the better team in the finals, and despite zidane’s inexcusable, yet understandable gesture..materazzi was rightfully punished…It was a sad endind to a stellar career..and while i can guarantee that in the coming year NO one except the italians of course will remember materazzi…zidan’s legacy (despite the butt) will go down in the histoty of football for years to come! viva zizu..the world loves you, forgives you and will never forget you. au revoir…

jade,

you are one of those, hopefully few, French supporters whose thinking is clouded by emotions and not facts. Just because Italy lost to France after the WC final does NOT NOT NOT indicate France should have won the final and was the better team in the finals – just get over it, move on, mate, and accept that Italy was better in the finals.

France’s history is not as great as you may imagine. Just because it won the WC in 1998 does not make it the greatest team in history. It will go down as a one-off, just like England’s victory in 1966.

What happened in the WC of 2002, mate? This is the great record of France, World Champions, in the first round:

Lost to Senegal
Lost to Denmark
Drew with Uruguay

Knocked out in the first round with only one point – France, the great World Champions. And the team was almost the same as that of 2006. These are the facts, if you want to keep dreaming, go the bed.

Quote from Jade: “Italy lost to france in the euro qualifiers, 3-1, france playing without zidane what a shame! this certainly proves where they stand as a team at an international level”

You idiot Jade! Do you really think the Italians care about a stupid euro qualifier??? Man you are so naive! This does not prove where they stand as a team. They are FOUR times world champions….. that’s where they stand as a team at an international level!

And how can a gesture be understandable if it is inexcusable?? I don’t get you. And do you know anything about football, its history? Do you love the game and respect it for what it is? Because if you think what happened to France is unfair, then don’t watch our beautiful game anymore. It happens to all teams! Simple as that. You think Italy hasn’t had any injustices in world cup football? 2002 world cup…. need I say more?

Just go back to your little dream world, reminiscing about your only EVER world cup in 1998. What an achievement, the boys should really hold their heads high. If you knew anything about the history of football, you would know that Italy lost more than half their international team in a plane crash in 1949, just before the 1950 world cup. They were undeniably the greatest team around at the time, having won 2 world cups already. It took a long time to recover, but they did so and have since won another 2 world cups. Your argument has no credence, no fact, no passion. You are a fool and know nothing about the game of football…. When your beloved France win four world cups, then you may talk…. We’re not talking pissy Euro cups either…. Fly away Jade, fly away to never never land…..
