Totti’s Back, But…

April 18th, 2006 | By: Jay | 7 Comments »

Totti is ahead of schedule and back on the pitch. But as Josh pointed out, let’s not get too giddy…playing an hour or so in a scrimmage versus 90 minutes in a Serie A match isn’t a good comparison. Much less many games compressed into a couple weeks, which is what will be required of Signor Totti this summer. Still, its a good sign, a great sign, and regardless of your opinion of the man he adds an explosive element to the matches. (Just ask the Danes).

This is all very encouraging, but I just hope he doesn’t push it too hard too fast and end up re-injuring himself. That would be devastating for him and the Azzurri.

even if he’s fit, i dunno who i’d prefer to start - him or DP. I don’t expect totti to be at his very best, and DP’s played rather well in his last few matches for the azzurri.

I don’t think we’ll know the starting 11 even a day before the game. All depends on fitness of key players (read totti, buffon) and form. If everyones fit this is what i expect:
(4-3-3)
buffon; grosso/oddo, canna, nesta, zambo; pirlo, gattuso/de rossi, camoranesi; totti/dp, gila, toni.

Tha looks spot on, although I wish Lippi would consider leaving Camo on the bench and starting both Gattuso and de Rossi.

I do not think they should bring DP to the world cup, and his last two serie a matches showed why. he is a full liability. I believe that the strikers on the bench should be Inzaghi, Lucarelli and then either Tavano, Vieri or Caracciolo.
Also if Buffon is out injured, Lippis should really get Toldo to play .. as he is Italys’s second best GK and lets face it, peruzzi really does not cut the mustard these days.
