Thirty And Counting

May 7th, 2006 | By: Jay | 7 Comments »

Luca Toni reached the thirty goal mark, the first man to do it in Serie A in 47 years. And only two of them were penalties. If I were looking for a potential superstar in this World Cup (with all apologies to Ronaldinho)… I think I’d start here. I know, I’m ‘preaching to the choir’ on this matter, but the potential is enormous.

Even if Luca Toni is the best player in the world, he won’t do the azzurri any good if he’s sidelined for no apparent reason. Remember Signori in the ‘94 final? Hopefully Lippi will show some common sense.

In the last three years Toni has scored 80 league goals! That is a career for some strikers. Zamparini was a fool to sell him for a paltry 7 million last summer. Fiorentina would get three to four times that if they were to sell him now. If his scoring touch translates to the WC (I can’t see how it won’t) I think we are looking at the next footballer of the year.
