The State of Italian Football

August 29th, 2009 | By: Paul | 8 Comments »

First off, sorry for the lack of posts. This has been a rough couple of weeks for me, moving from New Jersey to Miami. Trying to get settled, going to classes for the first time, and so on. Julian too has been moving to BC. But now I am ready to get back into posting, so here we go.

Milan Derby

The game was pretty good today. Inter dominated as the scoreline suggests, but this victory wasn’t a victory for Italian soccer. (Don’t take that as a knock on Inter) For a match that has so much history and importance in Italy, it’s a shame what it has come to. 4 goals in the Milan derby, not one from an Italian. The dependence on foreign talent has reached new heights, and this in the long term will cripple the national team. True, Inter doesn’t have many Italians to provide goals anyway, but if Milan scored I would say there would be an 80% chance it was a foreign born player scoring (Huntleaar or Pato) What’s your thought?

Get Ready for Christmas

Antonio Di Natale has 2 goals already, so get ready for some more action from him. Donadoni first had a hard on for Di Natale, but Lippi has continued this, and with Toto looking to be back in form from his injury last year, he will most likely be featured in the call-ups for the upcoming qualifiers. Not what the Azzurri need, we need young talent or players who can produce on the International level.

Francesc-O-My-God Totti

Francesco Totti just want’s to cause more controversy and stir on this blog. Il Capitano is on a tear and has 1 in 1 for Serie A competitions and 10 in 4 for Europa League. True, some are penalties, but Totti has looked like his Gold Boot form. I’m not calling for a return for him to the Azzurri, but is this enough for some of you to change your minds?

Return of a Champion
News today, Christian Zaccardo is returning to Italy to Parma. The World Champion is best known for his fuck-up against the US in 2006, but Zaccardo was a part of the Wolfsburg team that shocked the Bundesliga and won the championship last year. He isn’t doing too bad in the silverware department.

Yeah and Simone Barone is a world-champion too.

You won’t care, but as an englishperson this is pathetic, I think Italy has more homegrown than any of the other big leagues including Germany. Double the number england has. And you’re world cup holders.

globalisation will only increase, so get with it (coming from an american especially)

“Don’t take that as a knock on Inter”

Which it is… but who cares, there are so many – especially from the bloggers of this page – that I take it as rote.

“but this victory wasn’t a victory for Italian soccer”

Yeah, Serie A would be devastated if teams like did what Inter did:

1. Balance their books for this fiscal year
2. Took advantage of poor talent valuation (how much talent is worth) from other countries brought the money into Italy.
3. Made reasonably smart choices in the talent that was imported.
4. Recycle a lot of that money into one of the biggest youth academies in Italy that is relatively safe from poachers.
5. Spent less in transfers than was brought in, that is, acted fiscally responsibly.
6. Built a good team.

Yeppers, Italian soccer would die if everyone did that…

ps Several Inter players – native and foreign born – are Italian citizens. So your problem, if take your meaning instead of your inaccurate words, is really that players not eligible for the National Team didn’t score…
