The Return of Tonigol

Luca Toni scored today (I still find it weird writing that) over in the Bundesliga. Who cares, right? He’s a striker and his job is to score goals. But this wasn’t just any goal. This goal was huge, in a game between the top two in the German League. By all accounts, the clash was a very entertaining affair (something that Chelsea-Liverpool should look into trying sometime). Toni’s goal 30 seconds (?!) from time gave Bayern a 2-1 win over top of the table Hoffenhiem and drew the Munich side level on points.

Here’s a video of the goal:

Kinda scrappy, but still impressive. It shows that the 31 year old still has the shooting ability left in him, and that he can still be decisive in games, like he used to be- even if he’s rarely showing it for the Azzurri anymore. His Bayern form has been pretty impressive this year- 7 goals in 11 games is nothing to laugh at.

If only he could carry that form into WC qualifying. Hopefully he’ll be back to scoring for Italy again soon, and he better bring back his old goal celebration. This machine gun thing isn’t going to cut it.

Screw Toni. Over the last few months I’ve stood up for him saying he still has something to offer the Nazionale, and I still do. But right now, Miccoli should get the call up. He is playing out of the fucking world, and that’s with one of the slowest/dumbest midfields out there.

And by that I didn’t mean Miccoli should take his place. But Miccoli could add so much to the Nazionale right now.

I can’t stand Miccoli (it’s mostly the obnoxious eyebrows) but I can’t deny that his current form earns a call up. But Lippi’s got a boner for Toni the way The Jonas Brothers have for writing shit songs, so I doubt Toni will be dropped anytime soon. Who would you get rid of to call Miccoli? My vote (based on the last call ups) would go to probably Perotta.

Del Piero has been absent from the Nazionale recently, so that’s kind of a moot point.

has anyone noticed that all the team kits in Germany look like cheap shit? there is, like, zero sense of style. the colours are horrible and they look like a bunch of different flavour teletubbies.

finally, i am glad Alessio sees the down-side of Toni. the guy was great and maybe he will be again, but right now his finest days are past. i do not know if Germany has changed him but he has become a lazy, sloppy poacher with not much hustle. i do love the machine-gun-fire thing. very German.

and since we are on the Toni subject, i will reiterate my feelings for Gilardino again.

is there anyone else out there who sees that Moo2 and ‘Lardino are only scoring so much because of the amazing service they get from the Fiorentina mid-field? Grandma Moses could score with Monti, Kuzi, Melo plus Jovetic and Santana behind her.

if Lippi keeps calling Toni-Lardino up we will go down in the next group round.

Miccoli in for Toni. Cassano in for ‘Lardino. and get Iaquinta and Quagliarella in the line-up.

To get the one goal, Toni needed like 10 chances

It’s working for me now, Julian. I was at a Panera before, and I think they must’ve had that site blocked for some unknown reason. Thanks!

it is sad to see that the memory of our fans r short..name me one player in the world ( maybe other than Vieri) who can straight away adopt and top goal scoring charts in a foreign league…Toni is NOT finished..i expect more great things from him…Lippi must play 4-4-2 with Gila and Toni in front…midfield must be of quags, De rossi, Pirlo and Camo…..the back 4 must be Chiellini, Santacroce, Zamb and grosso..cant see any team in the world beating us

That’s true 9 champs league but players are called up based on current form. Toni’s been decent in the Bundesliga -hell, more than decent- but on the Azzurri he really hasn’t done much over the past year. And at his age, it’s getting tougher and tougher to argue against getting Cassano and Rossi in there.
