The Oriundi
One of the most hotly debated topics in Italian football is the concept of the Oriundi. Some of you guys might not be familiar with the word, though the most famous Oriundo around today is probably Camoranesi. So what is an Oriundo and why is it such a contested topic?

In basic terms, “Oriundi” refers to people not born in Italy, but who are immigrants to the country and have ancestors who originally from the peninsula. It’s not a sport-specific word, but you hear it often in connection with Italian soccer. See, Oriundi can play for the Azzurri if they become citizens of Italy or if they have close enough natural ties to the country. And this is where it gets controversial.
Many people think that Oriundi should not play for the national team at all. Our league actually took that path from 1966-1980, when no foreigners at all were allowed to play at any Italian clubs (foreigners were blamed for the prolonged decline of the national team, who lost to North Korea at the ‘66 WC). Some people think that since these players were not born in Italy, they have no right to play for the Azzurri.
Others take a different stance. Some argue that since these players have Italian blood in them, and live in Italy, they have all right to play for the team. These people tend to believe that birthplace has no matter in the issues of citizenship and callups.
Either way, they are allowed into the team currently under Lippi. Camo, as we all know, often starts for the team and helped us to win a world cup, even though he’s technically Argentine. No matter what your specific stance is, no matter how clear, this is probably going to be a hotly contested topic for as long as Calcio is around. Italian pride and views on foreigners means that Oriundi are never going to be universally accepted as native born players, at least not on the Azzurri.

De Rossi has more heart then any player in the world and when he is on his game is the best Defensive MF in the world that is why he has a place on the team..point agreed Totti needs to come back he is cassano x10 sub in Totti for my above formation take out G Rossi (use as super sub alla ADP)

yeah, sure, you fucking clown. didnt real table a 30 million euro offer for ambrosini and his “heading prowess” recently?

I agree with the above statement and promise to not make threats or suggestions of suicide <3

huhuhu, cool down man,
I think De rossi should stick there, ofcourse he played bad sometimes, not bad actually but below our expectation. As for Pirlo he can always play a bit front of De rossi, I know all the long list of trophies he got but it doesn’t count at the moment. Before the Confed, I used to hope that Lippi would drop him from strating 11 but after that I admit he is I think amongst few best performers we have in that ugly team.
So, it depends on current(next season performance to be taken) situation and the suitability of the formation for Pirlo. And De rossi I think should keep the DM place.
I might have a different opinion on this Oriundi. I’m no Italian, but as Mexes once said I’m frenchmen(I’m Asian) from Tolouse but I’m a Roman inside. I’m always proud to be a Roma supporter and will always be forever, as a Roman I’m staunch supporter of Azzurri as well.
Balotelli status should not be the question (even in the league I hate him), I think he can’t even speak African language and never step his foot there (just guess). Rossi too, he has Italian blood and proud to be and represent Italy.
As for Amauri, I just really hope he can rejuvenate our in effective upfront, I can say that’s the only reason I’m backing him this time.
-If later we find out he is actually rubbish, I’ll strongly support his passport to be revoked

Porchetta! Well said sir about DeRossi’s ban!
Totti at 40 years old will still be better than many people half his age. He should be included if Lippi is too pig headed to include Cassano
Heck, How does this sound for our strike force
Cassano – Totti
Pazzini (Balotelli)
There is no limit to what we can pull out of our pockets for the World Cup. Yet Lippi will disappoint and idiots will still be calling for a selfish brazilian to join our team.

Thiago motta is brazillian and has been capped twice by dunga, and if your italian why would you use the term “amicos”, since the italian plural version of friends is amici. Something tells me you have no clue wtf your talking about.

I would pick Marchisio well before I pick Derossi.

Guys all the love in the comments section warms my heart. It really does.

porchettaaaa = U are still a pathetic racist PIG . Go back to your hole

Before I comment on the actual post itself, I want to comment on the DeRossi comment. I’m not sure anyone can actually judge his playing when most of the time he had to cover the defensive players who were not doing their job. Besides that, with Roma’s injuries this year he has covered more ground in one season than any player I know of, plus he has had nagging injuries. Thus, running over to Italy’s trainer when he scored against the US in the Confed Cup.
Plain and simple. No thanks to Amauri. I want to win the right way. IMO that is with Italian players. I think Camo is stretching it but as long as your Mom or Pops was born in the country you play for I think that is ok. But like I said it is stretching it. We are the WC winners, we need to help set the standard.

I’d go for some porchetta right now.

Why is Totti even considered for an Azzurri return? He may have skills, but he cares more about Roma than Italy. No way he deserves to be called up… you can’t just pick and choose when you want to play for Italy. Where was he during the Euro’s???
I would completely lose all respect for Lippi and the Azzurri setup (whatever I have left) if he chooses him. Give Cassano a chance!

“Where was he during the Euro’s???”
nursing a torn ligament in his knee that forced him to miss the last part of the season.

I knew I’d called on that one…
still wouldn’t pick him for the Azzurri… we don’t need anymore 30+ playes on team. Who’s next, Vieri?

let’s wait and see how he does at blackburn this year before dismissing vieri. he owes the nazionale a few goals from euro 04.

don’t get me wrong, I loved Vieri in his heydays, but let’s be realistic!
I do hope he gets signed in the Premiership… should be interesting to see if he still has anything left.

“the Barwuah family agreed to entrust Mario to the Balotelli family, with the legal move successively formalized by the Court of Brescia.”
To be honest I didn’t know that part, so I guess that changes my view towards him slightly. Although he is still a young, arrogant prick.
btw, can’t we IP/e-mail ban people from commenting?

c’mon marco, i thought you would have picked up the sarcasm there about vieri. yes, bobo was a good striker in his day but he was already in his twilight back in euro 04 and since then has done nothing while playing at monaco and atalanta.

Mike- the ban system isn’t working properly, so the best me, Paul, and Daryl can do is editor delete comments as we see them. And we do check pretty often, but since the three of us realistically can’t be on this 24/7, some stuff temporarily slips through. But we are watching.

true… but I always thought he was well suited for the Premiership.
you never know… a guy that old desperate to see if he still has a shot at the World Cup next year… stranger things have happened.
Lippi does like him… he was in Lippi’s World Cup ‘06 squad until he got injured.
