The magic of the national jersey

July 7th, 2006 | By: Jay | 33 Comments »

We all know there are guys who “spit the bit” when it comes to playing on their national squad, and there are players (and teams) that somehow find an extra level. They might be fine club players, but what they’ll be known for forever is what they did in their national kit. Cruyff comes to mind. Diego, certainly. Zizou is perhaps one of the latter; the same could be said for Platini. But this isn’t the French blog is it? Non. So… give me the names of a couple guys you’ll always remember for their national heroics wearing the blue strip.

It was a short run, but how about “Z” for Zenga? I know he stood out at Inter for years, but in 1990 he almost won this tournament by himself. Italy couldn’t score, or wouldn’t score (tactics, again) so they pegged Zenga to a one goal lead and said “hold on” all the way to the semis. A herculean effort.

Zoff, Baggio, Schillaci…give us your thoughts.

The best italian players for their dedication to the “maglia azzurra” are:
Gigi Riva (his legs were broken two times playing for the azzurri. He’s still the top scorer)
Dino Zoff (his long career says it all. He won the WC as the captain, he was the coach in euro 2000)
Roberto Baggio (I don’t care he missed that famous penalty, we were in Pasadena because he brought us there and he played being injured)
Paolo Maldini (long time captain his class and behaviour always made us proud)
Fabio Cannavaro (great defender for Juventus he turns to a sort of super hero every time he wears Azzurro. He’s worth the golden ball)

Does everyone forget Paolo Rossi? who almost singlehandedly won the World Cup
for Italy back in 82? Three goals against Brazil? How about Marco Tardelli? Some other great players from the past are Rivera
and Fachetti, who may very well
be the greatest in a long line of great Italian defenders.

For me, Maldini stands out … class on the field and in life.

Cannavaro has been unbelievable this tournament (I could go on and on about his performance) but I do wish that we had Maldini, more for him than us since our team is geling. If we win on Sunday, I will think of Maldini and a part of me will regret that he never got to experience the WC win.

I think Maldini deserves to win the World Cup. They should just bring him on the squad before the final game against France. He can even play because he is still pretty good. I think if anyone Paolo Maldini deserves a World Cup.

Just an aside about a player who never wore the azzurri jersey. Being the very proud
son of Italian immigrants, and considering myself a full blooded Italian, I’d be remiss not mention another son of Italian immigrants who may very well be the greatest player
EVER. Alfredo DiStefano, who grew up in Argentina, played for great River PLate teams in the fifties and the great Real Madrid teams that won so many
European championships back in the late fifties and early sixties. Many experts think that he was an even greater player than Pele. My uncle In Italy who was more passionate about Calcio than any human being that I’ve ever met certainly thought so.

I understand football far more than you will understand it, eclispe. I am an ardent follower of Italy and am objective enought to say that an example of a team “destroying” another team is the 1970 final between Italy 1-4 Brazil. I repeat, France beating a very weak Brazil 1-0 is not even close to be called destruction of a team. If it were 4-0, yes, but 1-0, give me a break, mate. It’s you who sounds like one who hasn’t got a clue of football.

We have plenty of Merino sheep in Australia, jester, and they are precious for the best wool in the world. There is a strict restriction on their export. How did you get to Canada?

Are we talking about great players past and present or players that transform themselves into superhero whenever they don national color?
I am a true blue Azurri, no doubt about that but can we also mention players that excelled for other countries?
Remember the guy who score a hattrick (or hat-trick) 40years ago in Wembley? Yes, Geoff Hurst.
Mario Kempes of ARG also come to mind.
Italy has their own Christian Veiri, the tall center forward whose club record pale in comparison to his national heroics.

This is one of the latest news from Reuters: ”
Domenech wants win, holiday - Reuters
France coach Raymond Domenech said he was treating the World Cup final as simply a match to win before going on holiday.

“Our goal was to play seven matches and the seventh is coming up,” said the 54-year-old, who had kept insisting the 1998 champions would make the final even when it was not at all obvious they would get there.

“I don’t regard this as a final,” he told a news conference. “It’s just a match we have to win before quietly
going on holidays.” Who said the French are arrogant?

Happily rather than sadly..Italy won the world cup so lets not forget about all the hype:

1. Brasil..yeah whatever..as Public Enemy used to sing: Don’t believe the hype!!

2. England..yeah, another crux of a joke..Rooney played and behaved more like a drunk whore frequenter used to street brawls than a football player…and who’s fault is it he got a red card..Ronaldo’s!?!? typical, blame it on others..the rest of england was pathetic! OOps sorry to offend all the brain washed singaporeans that after years of premier league brainwashing they did nothing but support this pathetic team…in many ways wishing they were english..so sad…

3. Germany..oh yeah Ballack or Bullocks..I really do not know what suits the guy better as a surname..so much talk about this guy and his performance… pathetic!!….the nicest moments I remember Germany for at the world cup 2006 were: Klinsman having childish/schizophrenic fits at the side of the field ( he had some hate complex with water bottles from what I can recall..LOL) and then the poor German fans crying like little babies while Del Piero finished them off in style…serves them right..showing italy little or no respect before the game..I guess all they could do was cry like babies…btw klinsman has decided to give it another chance..he will train Germany’s ‘bottle-throwing’ team.

4. France…the only thing I can say is that..like Ferraris of today, which don’t breakdown like in the old days..the same goes for the Italian national team…cold and lethal precision..thank you for penalties..bye bye Zidane!!

5. Korea…thank god they went back to eat noodles because they showed nothing but the fact that the previous worldcup in korea was rigged and fixed mainly to benefit samsung and other big industry and secondly to promote teams that would never go anywhere without the blind referees present at World Cup 98.

Of the teams I much appreciated were:

1. Sweden..played great and had great spirit..lycka till next time

2. Argentina

3. Poland

4. Ecuador

5. Australia
