The Maddening Matrix

My one fear for the Azzurri is a Nesta or Cannavaro injury, leaving the central defense even more suspect. Marco Materrazi, a certain sub for either, continued to confound today, making me wonder even more.

Materazzi, aka ‘the Matrix’ (according to nickname-master and the voice of Inter, Roberto Scarpini) got completely scorched by Amantino Mancini on a simple ball over the top in the opening minutes of the Roma-Inter match, allowing Mancini to set-up Rodrigo Taddei for the easiest goal you’ll ever see. As if that wasn’t enough, Matrix then got booked in the second half for a couple of unneccesary fouls and disappeared for several stretches throughout the match.

And then…in the 90th minute, he put the clamps on a Roma victory with a thumping header past Doni. A beautiful effort, it mus be said. Materrazi has been slipping slowly for a couple years and probably isn’t going to improve greatly over the next 100 days and that’s why his flashes of greatness are so frustrating. Let’s hope he doesn’t end up being the deputy in the middle for long periods this summer, or there will be high anxiety.

Lippi should take a look at Terlizzi from Palermo. He is surely better than Materazzi, who is just a disaster.
