The Great Motivator
I always found this a little humorous. I mean, does an extra few hundred-thousand pounds motivate you to run harder? And even if it does, it certainly won’t improve your shooting. Nonetheless, FIGC is going to splash up to £200,000 on each player if the Azzurri bring home the Rimet trophy. ‘Victory shares’ aren’t unique to any sport or any country for that matter as the article notes (how desperate is Spain?) but I’d like to think standing on a platform in Berlin in July with a winner’s medal is motivation enough.

i agree. isn’t winning the biggest sporting competition in the world reward enough in itself? Don’t let Paolo Rossi hear about this.

I don’t have any problem with the players being compensated for playing in and winning the world cup. Sure, a winners medal is worth more than any bonus, but these guys are professionals and it’s perfectly reasonable that they should be paid for doing their job.
The size of the bonus is a little ridiculous, but if any player out there was motivated by that alone, then they will not have a good tournament. The cash is a bonus, not an incentive.

Actually it’s a good deal; Figc is betting but will win anyway; if Italy win the WC (which is very hard) they will have to give the money but the prestige return will repay Figc and if Italy will not win (quite probable) Figc will not give anything to the players
Players will pretend the prize for sure if they will win, but I don’t think they will mind about the prize during the competition or the finals
Anyway this “if you win I will pay you”system it’s far dignified and better than the “I will pay you (a lot) of money but please come to represent your country”system adopted in some situations (e.g. USA Basketball)
