Technology And The Game

March 4th, 2006 | By: Jay | No Comments »

This little item popped up on the FIGC site a week or two back, and I didn’t make much note of it… but now apparently the IAFB is taking note: the Italians would like to use hi-def cameras to determine if those pesky balls ‘on the line’ actually clear or not. (IFAB is the division of FIFA that determines the game’s rules.) I’ve never been a big fan of adding technology for officiating purposes. It slows the game down to a snail’s pace and whether you’ll admit it or not, the “we was robbed!” scenarios have lengthy roots in the game. And let’s face it, 99% of people’s problems with the officiating is not what happens on the goal lines, its what happens between those lines. So it’s not going to change many outcomes.
