Question about Pippo

April 6th, 2006 | By: Jay | No Comments »

It’s interesting to read all the outrage over Juve’s toppling in Europe, and now Inter president Massimo Moratti is wondering aloud if he’ll step down. Typical Italian drama, yes? But in the middle of it all, we have a real story brewing with Pippo Inzaghi and his resurgence.

So here’s the question: If you’re Lippi and you’re looking to fill that sixth striker slot, do you need size? speed? wits? Clearly someone with all those things would be best, but that’s a pipe dream. I think if Lippi opts for height in his sixth striker (not likely, as Toni and Gilardino are already in) then he has to lean toward Lucarelli. Vieri is likely finished and Iaquinta is an unproven quantity at this stage. Speed is almost a non-starter in the discussions for Italy. There’s nobody out there who can run like, say, a healthy Michael Owen.

So it probably just comes down to “who is the most clever” which is precisely where Pippo comes in. He’s a natural hawk, even at age 32, and is just as likely as anyone to pick up Totti’s scraps and rebounds. Six months ago I would have found this whole situation inconceivable, and yet here we sit. Just goes to show you how things can change overnight.
