Nesta fit for Monday

June 10th, 2006 | By: Jay | 2 Comments »

I have no idea if Lippi will start him, but I suspect he’ll probably use Matrix only because Nesta’s been unavailable and a bit rusty for the last few days. We’ll see.

Any way you slice, it this is good news. Gazzetta also reports that Gattuso’s condition has improved, but no timetable for his return is set.

Jay, it seems based on Lippi’s continual insistence that Nesta will be fit for the game (even before the doctors cleared him) suggests that Nesta will be in the opening 11. That said, it is hard to tell. If Lippi hadn’t been so positive about Nesta all week in the papers, I too would be dubious of his inclusion. We’ll see.

Check out the comments of Washington Post reporter Camille Powell in Saturday, June 10 Sports section. Powell has a great time focusing on the negatives of Italian soccer with its recent scandal and injuries and disappointing showings in international competitions while most inaccurately reporting that Francesco Totti “broke his leg” on February 19. Even the photo caption states Totti broke his leg. As a native Italian, perhaps my English is not very good but I didn’t think breaking an ankle and breaking your leg are the same thing. Powell also goes to some kid whose family left Italy 30 years ago and lives in Germany as the source for quote on how Italians feel about the issues facing the Azzurri. With all those Italians traveling to Germany for the Word Cup couldn’t she find an Italian who actually lives in Italy vs someone whose family left more than 30 years ago? This reporter should spend less time in the beer hall and more time writing about her own country’s American team and why the US has only been in 7 World Cups vs Italy’s 15 appearances or why the US has never won a World Cup while Italy has managed to do it 3 times! Maybe if the world rankings actually meant something the US would have been at the top of the draw when they picked the groups, like Italy, and not one of the countries thrown into the general pot!

Auguri!
