Meltdown in Palermo

January 29th, 2006 | By: Jay | 1 Comment »

We’ve all been keeping an eye on the Luigi Del Neri ‘death watch’ for a few weeks and finally it has come to pass—arrividerci, Luigi. I’m curious to see how our trio of Azzurri pool members – Barzagli, Grosso and Zaccardo – respond to the change. They’ve been at the center of the Palermo meltdown this campaign. The team has given up an astonishing number of goals (35, compared to 13 a year ago). People have been harping on Del Neri’s system, but at the end of the day it wasn’t much beyond a standard 4-4-2. The situation bears watching under caretaker Giuseppe Papadopulo.

Palermo made an emphatic start to the Papa era. Their first win over Milan in 26 years, and it was an almost full strength Milan side. Hopefully the defense is shored up to the level of last year, which would bode well for the WC hopes of Grosso, Barzagli and Zaccardo.
