La Pressa
Bobby McMahon on Fox Soccer Channel summed up something I’d been feeling but hadn’t quite put my finger on last night (paraphrasing a lot here)… “the Italian media are aggressive and need so many stories to feed the machine, so in a way, the scandal being such a huge story may direct attention AWAY from the national team, and they’ll be less distracted”.
In the end, this we know for sure: if Italy performs well, people will say it didn’t matter. If they stumble out of the gate, everyone will come out of the weeds blaming it on the scandal.
Enough already, the games can start soon enough!

let’s say is not far from the truth in 1982 for similar (a scandal )and some more mundane (a gossip about rossi and cabrini being lovers ?)reason the coach took a serious step and cut daily press meetings only zoff would speak (and that is an oxymoron since the guy doesn’t really say much )for everyone ,coach included so italy went on to that somehow miracolous ride to reach the holygrail of football..Now sincronicithy is again at work 2 players are asked to stay home (Buffon,Cannavaro) and Lippi himself is somehow investigated so the usual zealots are demnding he would step down …i say one thing :it is proper to have some peole pay but in Italy we always swing to extreme for the same crime you can be elected prime minister or be hanged ….i say craaaap! i hope that the team goes through another sort of self seclusion and concentrate only on what to on the field..this situation can be a burden but also a chance for redemption and a propellent to give 150%….i know with us is never easy if there is no drama is not italian …well after all did we invent Opera ??

Italy creates it’s own problems. They have another excuse for not winning the cup. Every time around,it is something new which is s.o.s. Viva Brasil.

Interesting point rescorpione. It is true there always is drama involved with Italy and it is quite possible the current scandal instead of negatively effecting the team may end up helping to bring the team together and will keep the press off the team’s back as they are more intently focused on the scandal.
Time will tell of course but it is an interesting idea which has been brought up here.
I very well remember Italy’s 1982 team and the scandal which surrounded that team. Hmm, can lightning strike twice for the Azzurri?

..Martin ..when i wrote my post i did not know yet that a lot of what i call “Zealots”(and they are many now!) who want all of the sudden to clean up a situation that took decades to rotten ask Lippi to step down for real small things ..he is not even investigated and those midgets already gave sentence ..in the case he would resign i wouldn’t bet a penny on italy and actually i would not even think they would qualify to 2nd round so at this poitn of confusion i am just crossing my fingers…i hope our Cup is not going to ruined BY PEOPLE WHO BY THEIR OWN WORDS DON’T CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL…Oh Italia what have you done again…..??

The calls for Lippi to resign seem misplaced at best, malicious at worst. The amount of drama surrounding this team is immense. Hopefully it won’t effect the team too much but how can it not?

like always in football; italia has won with luck, bad words and with his traditional comedia del arte !
