Jersey Throwbacks and Confusing Competitions

February 4th, 2009 | By: Julian | 6 Comments »

For the Confederations’ Cup this summer, Lippi’s men will be donning a new jersey. I haven’t seen a picture/mock up of it yet, but it’s supposed to be a throwback to the 1930’s style shirts we wore when we won the 1934 and 1938 WC. It’s due to have a V neck and the Italia tri-color symbol above the heart. This is what the Azzurri wore back in the 1930s:

So the “new” jerseys should look similar to those. But we’ll get new, redesigned, modern jerseys after the Confederations’ Cup.

EDIT: Of course, as soon as I post this, I see that Francesco has a great preview of the jersey here, complete with pictures.

This next part might get a bit confusing. This summer, the U21 European Championship will take place, and our Azzurrini are in it. And yet, the qualification groups for the 2011 U21 Euros have already been handed out. That’s right- unless I’m reading this wrong, it looks like we start playing qualifiers for the next Euro championship before this one even begins. Even stranger, it seems like the U21 Euros are every two years instead of ever four, like they are for the senior teams. This baffles me, but luckily, we have a pretty easy draw on paper. Our young guys will have to face Wales, Hungary, Bosnia, and Luxemborg.

And finally, we’re less than a week away from the Brazil-Italy friendly, which is taking place on February 10. As soon as Lippi releases the call ups, check here for a write up/preview.

That U-21 article initially confused me too, but I went to the official FIGC website and it looks like we start in September, not March as it says.

4 settembre 2009: Galles-Italia
8 settembre 2009: Italia-Lussemburgo
13 ottobre 2009: Italia-Bosnia Erzegovina
13 novembre: Italia-Ungheria
17 novembre: Lussemburgo-Italia
2/3 marzo 2010 Italia-Ungheria
3 settembre 2010 Bosnia Erzegovina-Italia
7 settembre 2010 Italia-Galles

Thanks Francesco. I’m surprised to see that Channel 4 got it wrong. They’re usually very reliable.

Every two years makes sense because if it was every 4 years a lot of players wouldn’t get a chance to play. Because any youth team is going to focus on older players, so if you’re 18 say, when it’s tournament time, you’re unlikely to make the team. But then if the tournaments are only every 4 years, you’ll be 22 when the next tournament happens. So it would all come down to being lucky with the year you’re born in.

Every two years means that way more young players get a chance to play in the Euros.

Does anyone know what TV stations will be broadcasting the Italy/Brazil friendly this month? Also, do we know if the Confederations Cup will be televised this Summer?

That’s a good point Ian. In other words, it’s about giving a chance to those guys who qualified for the tournament to actually play in the tournament.

Kick out Lippi before he embarrasses us..the dictator is just adamant and is dwelling on his past!!Agreed that he won us the world cup but now, he has put his ego in front of our national interest!1 he has selected this crapp team!!
Italy squad for Brazil match!!!!(Juventus), Amelia (Palermo), De Sanctis (Galatasaray).
Defenders: Bonera (Milan), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Olympique Lyon), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Zambrotta (Milan).
Midfielders: Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Pepe (Udinese), Perrotta (Roma), Pirlo (Milan).
Forwards: Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Quagliarella (Udinese), Rossi (Villarreal), Toni (Bayern Munich).

in each department, he has made FATAL mistakes…
HOW COME HOW COME HOW COME DOSSENA IS THERE IN THE SQUAD??HE DOESNT EVEN MERIT A BENCH IN THE LIVERPOOL, I MEAN BENITEZ HAS REJECTED HIM AS A FLOP AND HE HAS NOT EVEN FEATURED IN THE BENCH RECENTLY AND IT IS TRUE, THE GUY CANT DEFEND, JUST RUNS AND RUNS AND SENDS USELESS LONG CROSSES!!WHAT IS BONERA DOING IN THE SQUAD??HE IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER!!THIS WAS A GREAT TIME TO INTEGRATE THE LIKES OF SANTACROCE IN AN EYE FOR FUTURE!!
MIDFIELD:PEPE HAS BEEN THE FLOP SHOW, VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTANT FOR UDINESE FOR LAST TWO MONTHS!1WHY IS MAGGIO NOT THERE????????????????????AND IS IT WISE TO RUSH BACK PIRLO SO SOON???
FORWARDS:WHY THE FUUCK IS DEL PIERO, CASSANO AND MAYBE EVEN DIVAIO NOT IN THE SQUAD??THIS IS A JOKE!!IAQUINTA DOESNT EVEN FEATURE FOR THE FIRST ELEVEN FOR JUVE, HE IS NOT EVEN IN BENCH FOR CRUNCH GAMES, ALL HE GETS IS COPPA ITALIA AND HOW COME LIPPI HAS SELECTED HIM ????WHAT IS TONI DOING IN THE SQUAD???HE IS GETTING SLOW BY THE DAY, HE CANT EVEN SHOOT!!
LIPPI SHOULD TAKE THE BLAME IF WE DONT QUALIFY FOR THE 2010( FORGET ABOUT CHALLENGING FOR THE TITLE WITH THIS SQUAD!!)
