Ireland-Italy Comment Thread
I won’t be able to liveblog but use this post to comment on the game.
Streams here.
Lineups:
Republic of Ireland: Given; O’Shea, Dunne, St Ledger, Kilbane; Lawrence, Andrews, Whelan, McGeady; Keane, Doyle
Italy: Buffon; Zambrotta, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Grosso; De Rossi, Palombo; Camoranesi, Pirlo, Di Natale; Iaquinta
Ireland should be buoyed by the fact that Cyprus was thumped, but we should still come away win a win.

Pepe and Gila book ticket to South Africa
Non Juve players save Lippi !

This really sucks but maybe this had to happen in order for Lippi to wake the fuck up.

What a joke. All this to draw Ireland? I hate this NT selection. Like it was said, Lippi was lucky. So, is this the squad and tactics he would take if the world cup were tomorrow? Something has to change. Italy has so much talent that he is not using or does not know how to implement. It’s a shame really.

well italia2006, u can say whatever u want on Pepe, but dont talkbad about Gila..like it or not, he saved our asss in the firstmatch( he gave that wonderful back heel pass which led to the winning goalagainst Cyprusin the 90th minute) and he did it here on a brilliant strike todayyyyyyyyyy..he will be a super sub..he deserves his spot..whatabout his greatpass to Iaaquinta in the 2-0 win overBulgaria??

jgrif, we’ve been saying that the past 9 months. If the confederations cup did not wake him up, then we’re in trouble. Like I said, it’s shame.

we still suck pretty bad. Absolutely no creativity through the middle!

pepe surely did his part in the goal but should we take him to [Africa- Julian]?

it’s a terrible shame…they’re a clunky and dull italian team.. we need some flair…italian teams have always had at least one player on the field with some magic….but not this squad .we need cassano an it’s not even funny anymore…lippi needs to be slapped or sacked, cos at this rate we’re not going to look too good at this tournament

emotionally relieveddddddddddddddddddddddd!!
but we dont stand a chance against quality teams with some crapp players here..Legra is no Azzurri materail..(two goals were his fault)..Bochetti is too young for the experience..pepe must not be on the squad..palombo sux with nationalsquad..but surprise..surprise..zambrotta was very good today..iam disappointed with Gigi with the second goal

Lippi justhas to wake up and realise that this squad will embarrass us and select Cassano, Pazzini,Foggia, Cassani, Amauri .gennaro Gattusso is finished!!

gila books world cup spot..
well, i can see lots of gila haters here, but believe me, at the end of the day, he willbe decisive…remember his performances against Germany whenhe came as a subor against australia or even against USA..he willget betterand we need him..he will be more decisive than Guiseppe rossi or dinatale..i rate Quagliarella veryhigh but sadlyhe has neverfired for us afterhis wonderfull brace against Lithuania

here we goooooooooooooooooo lippi´s post match interveiw..
http://www.football-italia.net/oct10r.html
Marcello Lippi said it would have been “a huge injustice” if Italy had lost in Dublin, pointing out every time they qualified a round early, they won the trophy.
THATMEANS WE WILL RETAIN OUR TROPHY..BUT IF WE DO, IF WE DO..WELL..IAM READY TO DIE AT A RIPE OLD AGE OF 23……………………………………………OF UNBRIDLES HAPPINESS………………..

yes!!! Going to defendt\ our title. I am not going to criticize tonight, I will save that for another day. I am going to just enjoy the fact we will be in South Africa next year[hopefully with a few different players]
Fantastico!!!!
Campioni del mondo!!!
And Gila does get waaay to much crap on this thread. He is a solid pro and comes up with some clutch play.

ratings from goal.com
ITALY
Buffon: 6- Rolling back the years with his performances for club and country lately but he was unable to keep a clean sheet tonight as he was beaten by two well taken goals.
Zambrotta: 6- The AC Milan defender grew stronger as the match wore on. Even pushed forward to test Given in the 72nd minute. Will likely buy Gilardino a cold beverage as he could have been the goat when his foul on Hunt led to Ireland’s second goal of the game.
Legrottaglie: 5- Was guilty of giving away too many free kicks and it was his needless foul on Keane that led to Ireland’s first goal. A decent player at club level but is not Italy material.
Chiellini: 7- The ever dependable Juve defender was rock solid again tonight for Italy in spite of the erratic play by his partner in central defence.
Grosso: 7- Galloped forward with ease and was always a danger when he had the ball at his feet. Linked up well with Pirlo and more often than not his final product was good.
De Rossi: 6- Not a vintage performance by the Roma midfielder tonight. Blew a golden opportunity in the first half when he failed to connect properly after Di Natale’s dummy and did not perform up to his usual standards.
Palombo: 6- The Sampdoria hard man did all of the dirty work this evening and although he wasn’t spectacular it was enough to get the point his team was looking for.
Pirlo: 7.5- Italy are a hard side to beat when the AC Milan man is firing on all cylinders. His pin-point passing was on display tonight as he freed up Grosso on a number of occasions on the left hand side.
Camoranesi: 7- Shook off his marker to head home past Given in the first half and was one of Italy’s best players this evening.
Di Natale: 6- The red hot Udinese striker just could not find his grove tonight. He was not terrible by any means but he failed to trouble the Irish back line.
Iaquinta: 7- Was largely anonymous in the first half except for a couple of offside decisions that went against him. Picked up the slack in the second half in a major way by setting up Gilardino’s dramatic equaliser. Might also be aggrieved at the offside decision that went against him in the 48th minute that cancelled out his goal.
Substitutes
Gilardino 7.5- Came off the bench to be the hero for Italy tonight as his late goal will send the Azzurri to the World Cup next year.
Bocchetti: 6- Solid in his cameo appearance off the bench.
Pepe: NA – Stepped onto the pitch and promptly started the counterattack that led to Gilardino’s equaliser.
