I don’t know, Josh…it’ll be an interesting match for sure. Italy’s defense is great, Frances is very good. France’s midfield is more creative than Italy’s (IMO). Italy has a keeper, France has a maniac. Italy is coming off a long tough match that included an extra 30 minutes of running. Who knows what will happen with Barthez, but I’d be firing on goal from anywhere on the pitch if I were Italy. Still, I think Zidane WILL make a difference, and enough of one for France to win 1-0. Good luck non-the less!

I’m not so worried about Zidane. (Scoring goals will be much tougher than stopping them). Its Makelele and Vieira that I am worried about. Those two have put the clamps down on any creativity from every team they have faced. The only time I really remember in this tournament when the French defense looked scattered was in the second half of the South Korea game when the Koreans really attacked them out on the flanks. I think Zambrotta, Grosso, Camo and Perrotta need to stay wide and attack Abidal and Sagnol. Those guys look to be the weak link ( a relative term here) for the French as Gallas, Thuram, Makelele and Vieira have almost totally closed shop through the center. Any thoughts?

I had a buddy in college who played on the soccer team and he collected jerseys from other university squads (both those they played and just teams he liked). We were out at a local bar one night and he was wearing the jersey of a hated rival school we were going to be playing in about 2 weeks. He didn’t even think of that, but the crap he took that night was memorable. If we hadn’t both been easy going dudes, bar room brawls might have ensued.

I agree that Viera and Makelele will pose some problems. The way Pirlo has been playing however — such poise, such patience, he’s been playing like a Riquleme (can’t take the ball away from him) but with more selfless purpose — I think it will result in host of fouls at the hands (or feet) of Viera and Makelele. Hopefully, that will provide many opportunities for free kicks into the box. It’s time for Luca Toni to deliver–> and legitimately embrace all the pre-cup hype and accolades. Forza Toni.

Ribery has been France’s best player in my estimation, with the pace and energy of Robben. But I think the talent of our outside backs will keep him in check, and make him run out of gas by the 70th minute (just like Portugal).

alberto, unfortunately the Czechs and Ghana do not compare to Spain, Brazil or Portugal. Italy had a tough game against the US, they won against Australia at the last minute and had to play extra time to beat Germany, whereas France won their knockout games against big teams in the regular time. That’s not to say that les Bleus are stronger or at an advantage. Italy has one more day to rest and I’m sure they’ll prove a very tough challenge to the French.

Anyway, I hope nobody will need the ref’s help and that the winning team will earn its victory through deft and fair play. (maybe wishful thinking)

Brazil is great, however , i believe their coach commited soccer suicide by playing Ronaldinho up front with Ronaldo instead of having him service Ronaldo AND Adriano!! I can also assure you that Italy will not let Henry walk in unmarked like he did against Brazil. As for beating Portugal….France did nothing in the second half and in fact the ref was much more helpful to France than Portugal. I think this is an even tilt that will be won by the hungriest team. My logic is that Italy is hungrier as they haven’t won recently and they are more tenacious than France from goalkeeping to defence to the midfield ( i am not sure if you saw how Gattuso silenced Viera last year in Seria A ) and up front this team hasn’t lit it up but they have come oh so close many times and they are itching to please!! I love Zidane however, he will not enjoy the space he received against Brazil where he mesmerized everyone. You miss the point — the referees have had far more to do with “The Great” (and outrageously over-rated) Zidane’s success in the 2006 World Cup than Zidane himself. Count the French victories determined by PKs. Add up the bad-call yellow cards and penalties dished out to opposing players while Zidane and Henry run wild on European turf. Without help from obviously biased referees the French would have been long gone. Thank heavens we have 2010 to look forward to — take Zidane, Henry, and the French team off referee-friendly European turf and the French will return to 2002 form and head for an early exit. You will need not worry about displying your Zidane jersey. We can put the mockery of the 2006 World Cup behind us.

I can’t wait for tomorrow. I don’t know how to pick it. I still don’t think that Italy have played there best game. Canavarro, Grosso, Buffon, Gatusso, Pirlo, Materazzi, Zambrotta, they’re in form and playing wonderful football. I think Toni, Totti, and to a lesser degree Gilardino can still show more. Toni did pretty well against Thuram and Viera in the Seri A season too and I still think he can play a part in the final.

Ronaldinho overated? I don’t know, Brazil can’t win every time and players go through periods where there in form or not in form. I see it in hockey all of the time. The difference between winning and losing at the top level is really slim. I mean all of these teams are capable of winning. If a team gets a lucky bounce here or there, that’s the difference between winning and losing. Suppose France doesn’t get the penalty called against Portugal? I think a perfect example is Greece in the Euro. They didn’t have any Henry’s Toni’s or Ronaldinho’s but they were in form and played well enough to win. I can’t name a single player on that team.

I just went to the FIFA site and watched the Portugal penalty on Thierry Henry. I think the French fans can pretty much stop talking about the Grosso penalty against Australia. Henry went down like he was hit by a sniper…

I am not a French-hater and i like them for beating Brazil, coz Brazil thinks they are 5-times champions and assume they can just show up and win again.

I am even thinking that France may have a slight edge over Italy on the basis of experience; skills and in-depth knowledge of their opponents (French players in Serie-A).
And based on history, France has beaten Italy since 78.

Can France win? Possibly, yes i think with some LUCK and given their ABIITY. But do they deserve to win? NO!!! Why?

Reasons :
1) Selfish team – they dont want to win the WC for the nation or even for their fans, they just want to win it for themselves. Check out what the players have been telling us daily. (eg. Zizou is retiring; Class of ‘98 will die, so..). FYI, in the 1st place, they didnt even want to be in the WC. Thats why some of them have retired. And when they changed their mind, they say things like ‘mysterious visit” by someone. C’mon. All these are selfish claims. Even that deli-france team manager of theirs is saying things like “we treat this final as any other match..then we go on our holidays”. If this WC is really that important to them, they would want it badly, which to me is an important factor in determining whether u deserve it or not.

2) France had not worked hard enough to get to the finals, unlike Italy. If Germany or Argentina had come into the finals, i would support them also, because they would have proven themslves by playing serious football to get there. As for France, they beat champions Brazil. But all of us know that Brazil wasnt the same team that we want it to be. Even Michel Platini commented he’s not impressed with France performance. If France had played well and got to the finals, then i will support them.

Some players on the French side played well. But just because they play well and is retiring doesnt mean they deserve to be cup winner. Look at so many other players who played well but their team got kicked out also.

And i also want to tell all those anti-italian people out there to give it a rest. Dont debunk Italy just because they’re against France, but debunk them if u can find fault with their performance in this tournament (repeat in this tournament).

Italy deserves to be in the finals because they played good football to get there. And if they can continue to do so, they deserve to be the cup winner. Based on performance. Yes.

And Italy also deserves to be the winner because they need it and want it badly. They are playing for their nation, they are playing for their football industry, they are playing for lifting up their economy and country. The french (not what i say, but what the players/team manager do and say) team play for themselves and for holiday sake.

If France wins, its totally a lousy WC season for me. Coz an underserving team wins (whether its France or team that behaves like France). If ITaly wins, it’ll do alot of people proud, and also we can look back and said a great peforming team with so much expectations and needs finally came thru to be the cup winner. It’ll be in our memories for a long time.

Go ahead and support your team, but pls stop bashing Italy anymore. As far as i’m concerned, Italy (and what they represent) is a more deserving champion than France in this tournament.

Even though I’m not a soccer fan and have not followed this, I’ll speak with an “understanding” of the facts. The facts are: The ugly, greasy SHITalians cheated their way to a despicable and slimy victory by provoking the master of the game, who they feared and knew WOULD OUTRIGHT KICK THEIR shit flea infested asses. Italians are a bunch of dirty, ugly (HORRIDLY), slimy, greasy, scum of the earth. They have no reason to exist. Zidane is over rated. He did nothing in this world cup except in a few games. Italy should have won in regular time but Toni’s goal was called offisde even though he wasn’t offisde. It was similar to Argentina’s 2nd goal against Ivory Coast where the scorer was onside and the offisde player was passive and a non-factor. France were lucky to get it into ectra time. Zidane is considered 1 of the best players of his era. Alright, he may be but he comes from an era of rather mediocre players. In the end, Zidane’s dismissal meant nothing as Trezeguet still would have gotten a PK and missed.
