Gilardino: Best Player in Italy

February 1st, 2006 | By: Jay | 2 Comments »

Not sure how I missed it, but in case you did as well, the Italian football ‘Oscar Awards’ were handed out earlier this week and Alberto Gilardino won the gong for Best Player in Italy by his peers. (Hey, any excuse for a party, right??) He was about the only person in the room to win that wasn’t wearing the black-and-white of Turin’s La Vecchia Signora.

This was the event where Fabio Capello uttered the now famous zinger about Inter– “they are a nice side…of Argentines”. Funny bit, until you realize that without imported names like Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet and Viera, ol’ Fabio wouldn’t be sitting at the top of Serie A, would he?

Very true about Juve, since 6 of their starting 11 are foreigners. I wish FIFA and UEFA would make good on their promises to promote more home grown talent and limit the number of foreigners a team can employ. I’d like to see a mostly Italian side win the scudetto once in my lifetime.
