Get me Dick the Butcher

July 14th, 2006 | By: Jay | 49 Comments »

If you don’t know what I’m referring to, its a reference to the character who said “the first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”…a line from Henry the VI. (That’s Shakespeare, not the French striker. ahem)

Yes, as it turns out, this whole “replay the final” silliness was sparked by a lawyer who lives in France. I understand the notion that this was a heartbreaking final and a travesty of justice for some people. But if we didn’t have to endure heartbreak and we didn’t all have our own opinion and discussion of “what is just and what is not”, then organized sport would mean NOTHING. So let it be. This was not some orchestrated effort or men in dark rooms paying each other off to seal the outcome. It was an incident that happened during a heated match by two players that should know better. Leave it to the coffee houses and the pubs for the discussion, but please for God’s sake, keep it out of the courts.

Also, who goes to Europe this year if all four teams are banned?

Darn, I wanted to see Juve drop to C just so the world understands how seriously we take this stuff in Italy.

Yet there are fairly serious punishments for the Clubs.

Juventus will be hard pressed to keep it lineup of stars and make up 30 points to avoid being dropped down to Seria C.

Catherine… why in the world were you watching ABC??? Intelligent play-by-play was readily available on Canadian TV via a British transmission feed- with no golf!

I think the 30 point deduction is equivalent to going down to C. With that deduction, it will take them two years to get back up to A, just as if they were all the way down to C.

I am really curious to read/hear the evidence that was used to implicate each of the clubs. I know we have heard some of the Moggi conversations, but there must be more.

I wonder what this does to the Totocalcio and la Schedina.

Will Juventus games be featured and available to be bet upon?

If the team keeps most of its stars and does not loose a match it will devaluate the entire betting game.

LOL, there are many implications to these teams being dropped and they affect everybody, I heard the Salaries would be dropped in 1/2 if the teams got relegated.

TITI | July 14th, 2006 at 4:27 pm

In light of the ITALIAN match fixing scandle, this final should be replayed.

That’s a great idea, TiTi… because of the scandal, which had nothing to do with the players or the World Cup, let’s replay the match until YOU get your desired result. If we play it enough times, the French will win eventually, right? lol.

Forza Azzurri.

LOL , wrong Italy is to good to lose no matter how many times they replay the match ;)

Hey everyone, some of the losers that post anti-italian comments are from Canada. I live in Canada and let me tell you it’s hard when Italy wins because all the “Cakes” as we call them who don’t have a team or identity go for England or France. They knock it because they’re ignorant and don’t know any better. It’s hard for these people to say congratulations and be on their way, they are not mature enough. They hear the word “scandal” and italy in the same sentence and now they are walking around accusing every italian they know of being a criminal. It’s pretty pathetic that Canadians are jumping on the hate bandwagon when they all preach anti-racism. I appologize, most of us are educated and try to understand both sides of the story before putting forth our opinion. It’s pretty dis-heartening to see that Canadians are making these comments, my only explanation is that it’s probably just teenage angst “i hate my father” stuff, they’ll get over it.

I have heard that Lecce, Messina, and Treviso, who finished in the Serie A relegation zone last season, will be reinstated to the top flight at the expense of Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina. Is this true?

That list is very strange to look at Marco!

Serie A is going to be an Inter / Roma showdown this year, and the rest will be WIDE OPEN. :D

actually its kinda freaky (please don’t take this the wrong way italy fans)

1934, 1938: Musolini

1982: match fixing scandal, major players implicated

2006: match fixing scandal, major clubs implicated

it seems like Italians play best when there is corruption at home, I hope this doesn’t motivate anyway to try and get Italy to win more often!
