Future Italian Superstars Part 2: General Overview and Napoli

Last time, alessio gave us his shout outs for Juve players that could be staples in the Azzurri. Today, Francesco from the Serie A Offside gives his take on the situation:

“My youngster top 3, based on current form, is
1) Marco Motta, 2) Claudio Marchisio, and 3) Salvatore Bocchetti

Older players that deserve a call-up: (I would say Matteo Brighi but I think it’s about 95% he gets called by Lippi this weekend)
1) Marco Marchionni – Italy doesn’t have many natural wingers and Marchionni is one of the few. He always gives his all, and when he’s in form he’s a very good player.

2) Sergio Floccari – A striker with a mix of everything: power, technique, positioning, finishing, and he’s only getting better.

3) Gaetano D’Agostino – I know he was called by Lippi a couple of months ago but I still think he’s the best Pirlo sub we have. He controls Udinese’s midfield and is the real heart and soul of their team. Without him they look lost.

some other honorable mention players:
Tibero Guarente (Atalanta), Andrea Cossu (Cagliari), Daniele Conti (Cagliari), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria), Giuseppe Mascara (Catania), Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo), Federico Balzaretti (Palermo), Manuele Blasi (Napoli).”

Two people asked so far, and both agreed on Marchisio. For the record, I also think he’d be a good call up. Sure he’s young and relatively untested but like they say, there’s no better time than the present.

Neil from the Napoli Offside also was kinda enough to give a shout out to three Napoli players:

“Napoli has three young Italian players worth mentioning.  The first is
Fabiano Santacroce, who is 23.  He has already been picked once by
Lippi but did not play.

The second is Andrea Russotto, who is 21 and is struggling for a place
in the Italy U-21.  He has good ball skills and should continue to
improve.

The last one is 18 year old keeper Luigi Sepe.  He made an emergency
debut for Napoli against Fiorentina and is one for the future. “

And again, for any serie A bloggers reading this, please email me your take on it. After we get through all the clubs, I’ll write a general summary of all the players and a quick overview of all of them so we can have a definitive-ish list.

I have a feeling Kqql is correct, but what if Lippi snapped up Motta for the senior side and this opened up a spot on the right for Santon in the U21 team? According to protocol, he should be playing for the U19 team right now but he wasn’t called up and this leads me to believe that he’ll make his U21 debut soon.

Lippi already said no U21 guys are going to get called up until after this summer at the earliest.

Drat. I guess there isn’t much to look forward to at the Confederations Cup, since the only non-U21 player I’m interested in having called up is Cassano, and we all know that’s not happening.

Santacroce has been shifted to RB and was totally found out in the centre this season, believing his own press and playing without tactical or tackling discipline.

Sportitalia did a show tonight and they highlighted: Balotelli, Motta, Santon, Marchisio, Giovinco and Bocchetti as the young names with a chance when Lippi names this team for the qualifiers. Personally, only Motta has a chance I feel.

Which is why Lippi’s lost the plot. He’ll keep up with his Boneras and Dossenas.

Julian: Not entirely true. Lippi said that he’d leave some players for Casiraghi until this summer (He mentioned three. One of them was Marchisio). He didn’t say anything about Motta and several medias are predicting that he and Brighi will get a call-up.

Honestly I don’t get why Russotto doesn’t start a couple of games. Majority of the time I see him come in as an sub with 10-15mins left and he looks impressive when he plays.

What about Christian Maggio? I loved watching him play at the start of the season. I think he and the rest of Napoli just hit the wall. I think the Intertoto kicked their butt.

Balotelli hasn’t developed much since the golden season he had last year. I don’t think he’s even close to a national team call-up. Bocchetti was a pleasant surprise to see on the list… quite a few were skeptical of the lad because of the disastrous game against Belgium in the Olympics but I always knew that he had real quality. In time, he will become what Santacroce should have been, IMO.

Lorenzo- I just saw it now. I’ll read your guys comments and include that in tomorrow’s post along with Chris’ view on the Roma players that should be called up.
