Expectations for Donadoni

July 17th, 2006 | By: Jay | 57 Comments »

Kudos to Roberto Donadoni for having the ’steel’ to take over the coaching position on the heels of the WC victory. Short of winning Euro 08 and the World Cup in 2010, the bar has now been set so high you couldn’t hit it with an Englishman’s penalty kick. He virtually has no chance, right? right?! But since he took the job….how does one follow a legend? I’m sure Roberto is sitting there hitting his ‘refresh’ button on the web browser right now in anticipation (cough cough) but here are a couple thoughts:

1. Worry about Euro 2008 and nothing else. Start looking immediately at the players that will help you get there and pat guys like Pippo on the back and say ‘thanks for a great career. we have to move on.’ Tell guys like Iaquinta they’re vulnerable unless they step it up immediately. I know its a four year cycle to WC 2010 and that’s the ultimate goal, but a bad showing in Euro 2008 and Donadoni won’t have to worry about getting there.

2. Call Lippi and ask for advice NOW. The Azzurri were in disarray before Trap was shown the door, and Lippi stitched things up in a hurry. Especially as Roberto is light on experience, he’s going to need some people to lean on.

3. Keep the attack. This is probably the most obvious and the most likely to happen. Donadoni understands the necessity of the wings and he was offense-minded during him time at Livorno. If this World Cup proved anything, its that attacking and risk-taking teams (no 4-5-1) will survive in the end. Leave the ‘lone striker’ stuff for countries that can only field one striker and be done with it. Ask the English how they feel about Sven and his Lone Ranger offense. I’m sure they’d agree.

Hi Barbar you know I love you but…don’t you dare mentioning Podolski or your king is going to banish you from the reign.
Yeah Basti Schweinsteiger is quite a good talent.
Mertesacker despite his awfully sounding name proved he is a very solid player, quite a surprise.

the young players that more impressed me were Villa (is he young?? i don’t know but i liked him), Tevez and maxi rodriguez .. i think they were the best young of the world cup

I think that Italy have the potential to win the Euro 2008 and repeat the world title, the Calciopoli, may be benefic for the Azzurra.

Buffon is the best of the world for another 4 years, at least. Amelia is good, and Antonio Mirante is fighting with Curci and Alfonso.

In defense, Barzagli an Bonera have potential but they need a good coach, Barzagli has themm but Bonera needs jump to a big club, like Inter, another guys like Stendardo and Coda, to made the “Materazzi Job”. Michele Canini is the natural replacement for that mercenary named Cannavaro, and Cesare Bovo for Nesta, something important is to prove diferrent pairs, because Fabio is old, and Nesta is too fragile. The left side, is very tought, behind Grosso is Manuel Pasqual, he maybe is better than zambrotta, and Chiellini for more pyhsical game, Motta, Moretti, Pisano, etc. The right side is good but not much, with zaacardo, oddo, mesto, casetti, and Canini.

The midfield, is FINALLY GOOD, Aquilani, Maresca, Liverani, Donadel, Donati, De Rossi, all them defende and atack, have a very good technice and creativity, the problem now is the vice-gattuso, only perrota and blasi are capacited, but not at a great level, the sides are very strong: Semioli, marchionni, foggia, rosi, esposito, diana, the best is Foggia.

Forward is the srongest point: pazzini, cassano, lucarelli, caracciolo, brienza, di natale, iaquinta, pelle, palladino, giuseppe rossi, rocchi, tavano, miccoli, bonnazzoli, bazzani, flachi, di michele, gilardino, toni, foti, cassano, pellisier, langella, bianchi, di vaio,

The only doubt is the 10, maybe montolivo, gasbarroni, Russotto, but is the weakest point, ¿a surprise aparition? ¿Maybe Giuseppe Rossi? Totti is overrated.

Inzaghi, del piero, oddo, camoranesi, perrota, iaquinta, materazzi, peruzzi, CIAIO.

Important to manintain a age average around 27 and 28, because the big competitions are made for the experience.

My captain for the 2010 is Gigi Buffon, Cesare Bovo or Manuel Pasqual for the 2014, Michele Canini for the 2018, and Maldini for the 2024. Hopefully Donadoni likes the offensive, but with the tradicional strongest defensive of the world. Cassano will be the next Baggio (not in level), because leave all the responsability in the defense is very dangerous.

Teams like Palermo promove the national and young talent, something positive, in the other side, Milan promoves DINOSAURS and Inter overrated sudamericans.

Will the Italian team repeat what France (the only nation so far) did in 1998 and 2000 with two titles in a row?

That’s a challenge!

Will Italy win the Euro? Obviouslly Yes…do I look nervous about that. Who would challenge them? Be serious

Speaking of a challenge do you think France will ever catch up to Italy’s 4 Four Stars **** ….Now that’s Mission Impossible.

I don t think Italy will make it and many around me (international sample) think likewise… You seem quiet overconfident, Italy won the final yes indeed, but they won by the thinest of the possible margin let alone the Zidane incident and the fact that France played the final minutes one man down. After all the game was fairly balanced (don’t you deny this please). So, we do not really have any warm feeling or impression that Italy absolutely dominates the whole European football world… Well, well, all in all bragging is part of the game.
I like the team though ;-)

Catherine,

The link you keep spaming all around is not so interesting, why do you insist on posting it everywhere with such thorough dedication? Easy Zidane bashing from a third world football country’s second zone sports paper doesn’t sound so eloquent. And if you don t like Zidane then do the bashing yourself.
Maybe you should stick to Hockey games… Ok I’m just being mean…That was too easy… ;-)

I was only partially joking…but confident…absolutely, just look at their team and the depth they have coming out the the youth system.

The only factor ZZ played in the final was the one great header towards the end which was outdone by a brilliant save by Buffon. Other than that Gattuso had ZZ pretty much checked in the midfield. (A PK goal hardly counts as brilliant play)

I assume when you say Italy won’t make it your talking about winning and not Qualifying. When you say many around you are you referring to your friends? What International Sample are you referring to? Please point it out to me. I do not recall a world cup or euro championship that Italy was not one of the favourites to win.

Thanks for accepting that bragging is part of the game when your team wins…..considering all the trash talking that goes on during and after the finals of any major tournament.

All in good fun though….it is only sport after all.

Kasets,

1/International sample: friends and classmates from all over Europe + Middle easterners…

2/You’re assuming right, I was talking about final victory not qualification (shouldn t be a problem) as I was referring to the challenge of winning both World cup and Euro cup.

As for the game next september… To be honest I predict a boring game ending in a tie. I see a good Italian defense as usual and a French team with great potential but still under re-construction post-zidane era… BUT, it’s just speculation, time will tell… I believe both teams will qualify for Euro 2008

Of course they can repeat, France is in decadenece (very pshiycal palyers) the new generation only have defenders and keppers, England dont have talent players, Spain is a little team with tenchice but overrated players and with loser mentality, Germany witouth talent, Holland never wins, Italy has emergent talent in all the positions and winner mentality, is the second country in football behind Brazil, and the brazilians copies the italian sistems (parreira, autori, lopes, luxemburgo, scolari, dunga, Sao Paulo).

Ciao Sergio,

You are right mate… Sure everybody think that Italy is going to win Euro 2008… English, Germans, Portuguese, Dutch,Spanish,Ukrainians,Polish,Swiss,Austrians…Even Indians, they are all absolutely convinced, they won t even try to qualify! And you are also right, everybody is jealous of Italy, Italian food and Italian women, everybody wish they were born in Roma… The world is full of Italian wannabes, the French don t have their own culture, poor them… ;-)

Sergio, do you really mean what you wrote and supposed or did u just drink too much Martini?? Give us a break.

I m a French national but my parents came from Italy, I know both countries well… I tend to support Italy though I love both countries and yes like you stated I do believe that “we” have some of the most beautiful women, food, dress and so on but so does France and Spain, and… Most of all I certainly do not turn a blind eye into other cultures with condescending bragging like u do….
I fight a lot with most of my multi-origins friends who keep disdaining Italian football team for some biased reasons… But what you just wrote about France is even more rubbish and shows how ignorant you are about the country and its population…That is because of people like u that Italian haters exist. If France is so insipid as u suggest it I wonder why is that so many Italians came here to settle down, my family included?! I wonder why so many Italians learn French? I also wonder why is that both countries have a lot in common? I also wonder about u posting from Canada freezing your ass off instead of going down the mediteranean bitch…?

As for football, I fairly think that Italy and France will go through and that ur wish that Ukraine goes through instead of France is sheer France bashing. Italy 3 - 0 Ukraine, Italy 1 - 1 France (penalty 5 - 3)… does it ring a bell? Is it so much of a challenge for u to recognize that the game was fairly balanced??

Finaly, regarding Zidane I never argued that he could have changed the game result nor did I mention his incident in my comments… Oh well, you probably could not refrain from typing bullsh*t… ;-)

Ciao a dopo…

Sergio,

lol, oops, sorry I didn t mean “b*tch”, rather beach (though I must admit I thought of u as a b*tch)…Well u probably guessed out of the context

Winnipeg s hot right now? Well Canada is not known for its tropical climate but well, now I know better about it, damn! we must do sth about the melting north pole icebergs…

Mother of argentina…mmmmh then Spain must be the father… As for Germany as a brother… That must be a brother in law because Germanic and Latin cultures are quiet different…

As for France and Italia I’d say a couple with alterning roles, this time Italia was the man as they did France in the final!

;-)

ps: WTF r u doing in Canada, u lost ur way?

Pao,

Yea I have plenty of great movies coming out soon… Maybe u heard about actress like Estelle Desange, Melanie Coste and Katsumi… I’m working on a dual prod with Mario Salieri is doing fine as well. Tell Rocco we miss him. Tell him to pass by for a cup of cofee.

ps: r u really bald?

France is famous for:
Gioconda (made in Italy)
Napoleone (made in Italy)
and Monica Bellucci (made in Italy) :-)).
Fact is that we are world champion and France not and pls do not compare the curriculum of Italy w/ France there is not story my friends. Italy is the story of soccer, the main player. France is just a character actor. No way to compare either for national team or club teams.
GAME OVER!!!! TRY AGAIN IN 4 YEARS FROM NOW!!!

i think euro ‘08 should be a mish mash of the established guard and an influx of new talent…

nesta, cannavaro, and zambrotta will have automatic spots is they choose on defense…grosso (now with inter???) will most likely remain…im quite sure that a group of barzagli, canini, bonera, coda, and chiellini, bovo, will also be there…zaccardo could be included but i think with these vets, he wont be called…

the midfield belongs to two players, pirlo and de rossi…hopefully gattuso returns in ‘08 and can keep form for ‘10…other names you could hear from are semioli (great down the wing), montolivio (the next pirlo???), aleandro rossi (a regular beside de rossi at roma at age 19) donadel (ball winner), biondini (gritty type), foggia (speedy winger)…

if totti retires, the number 10 spot could go to a host of people but i think it is alberto aquilani’s to lose…giuseppe rossi might be too young and not have enough experience by ‘08 to unseed aquilani but van niestelroy’s departure from manU should help him…

upfront, i think it’s toni’s and gilardino’s to lose until they prove they arent worthy…cassano will be brought into the mix, as well as pelle…but lets not forget, pazzini, who was voted in 2005 the young player of the year…hes already a scoring machine at fiorentina…those are my five for ‘08…okaka has an outside shot…

i hope i didnt miss out any big names…

BUT, AND IM CAPPING THIS TO SHOW MY POINT, DEBATING WHO WILL BE READY FOR 08 AND 10, IS SHEER SPECULATION…I SAW GROSSO’S SECOND CAP IN PERSON AND KNEW RIGHT AWAY THAT HE WAS BOUND FOR GREATNESS…3 YEARS AGO, WHO WOULD HAVE SAID THAT NOT ONLY WOULD HE HAVE BEEN A NATIONAL TEAM STARTER, BUT ALSO A KEY PERFORMER AT THE WORLD CUP???

donadoni needs to follow lippi’s lead and look outside of milan and turin when fielding the national team…barzagli, zaccardo, grosso, barone, all came from palermo…
