Down Goes Canna. Down Goes Canna.

June 2nd, 2008 | By: chris | 26 Comments »

Terrible news emanating from the Azzurri camp this morning: After a challenge by Giorgio “The Schnoz” Chiellini, Fabio Cannavaro had to be stretchered off the practice field and he’s now at the hospital getting X-Rays.

Team doc Paolo Zeppilli:

“We will have to see but it is not nothing. It will take at least 12 hours to assess the injury.

At times there is a lot of pain but then the situation doesn’t seem so serious. The thing that we need to know is whether or not the bone has been injured.”

We’ll have to wait and see what the results of the scan are, updates forthcoming.

In the event that he can’t continue, however, who gets the call? Gamberini? Bonera? Is Panucci enough? Then who starts? Barzagli-Chiellini seems too raw a pairing. Materazzi plus anyone seems like too shitty a pairing. Too depressing to think on, really.

Pray for Canna.

not good at all. Gamberini i guess, he’s solid but green. there’s no acceptable replacement for Canna.

*praying*

The pics of him being stretchered off, looking grim and resigned, are not good, though.

i’d take Nesta in a second, but it won’t happen. Chiellini is hard nosed to begin with, i can imagine him going full-bore during training to win himself a spot and crush ankles along the way.

Nesta come out of retirement!

Legrottaglie should have gone (or Gamberini) instead of the Matrix in the first place.

Gazzetta seems to be reporting that nothing is broken (this is second hand since I don’t speak Italian), but he is being transported to Vienna for an MRI. Canna’s agent doesn’t sound positive though.

This is bad not just in general, but for the Netherlands match, there is only one person on the Azzurri who plays with and knows well the three most on form Dutch players (Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder, and Robben): Canna.

Multiple places reporting no fracture and that he’s going in for an MRI.

I think Chiellini just drew the ire of an entire country.

Mutually agreed. Let’s call Nesta. If Panucci can play at 35, Nesta can play at 32. Age is no reason here. Other than Nesta, I have no clue who I’d call a safe choice.

You have got to be kidding me. I don’t want to knock Canna out already in case it isn’t that serious, but this sure doesn’t bode well. Praying for him to get better.

In the horrible event that doesn’t happen…hell yes, order me up one Sandro Nesta please. He’s been simply magical at times this season. However, seeing as the reason why he retired was to extend his club career(wonderful for us Milan fans, not so good for the Azzurri side though), I don’t know how willing he’ll be to go.

Oy vey.

I just read on gazzetta that Cannavaro is officially out of euro-2008
gamberini in his place, useless thinking about nesta, best defender in italy, but he has already said he would not rethink int’l retirement

He’ll be missed, not only the leader on the field but also in the lockerroom. Hopefully players like Buffon, Panucci (in a certain way) maybe Rino can carry out that leadership on and off the field.

Quote from Fabio
“Io sono sempre ottimista, anche in questi momenti. PerĂ² ho preso una bella botta…”.
Translation….
I’m always very optimistic, even in times such as these, however i took a big knock.
Probably him admitting to himself that this run and possibly his azzurri career is over

Gamberini will probably remplace him.

As a french, i’m not worried like you. But i’m afraid that we are going to lose our captain (Vieira) too. So sad.

Forget Nesta – he quit. Doesn’t deserve the opportunity.

As for Cannavaro it’s a sad and big loss, but one that we can bear given the talent and will on this team. Hopefully it will inspire the kind of fighting underdog spirit that drove us to victory in 2006. As for Chiellini… he better have an absolutely heroic tournament or he will deserve the infamy he receives.

Guys have just seen the challenge on english tv. looks pretty innocuous to me. looks like he twisted more awkwardly than anything else. Shit i can’t believe it!!!! Arghhhhh!!!!
what now. Reports are that Gamberini is already on his way.
I can’t believe it. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it was any other player but not il muro di Berlino. Shit!!!!
the only piece of good news is that Viera is doubtful, but only for the 1st game at this stage and Robin Van Persie is unlikely to be fit for the Italy game. Shit!! now i’m worried!!!

Tough luck indeed. Sorry about that. Itdistorts the starting chances.

But then again: Maybe Materazzi has a few tricks in his sleeve … again…
