De Rossi and Fair Play

March 22nd, 2006 | By: Jay | 2 Comments »

For all the garbage we hear about the modern game and “how it used to be better back when blah blah blah (enough with the Erica Cantona commercials!)” I think we ought to note that Daniele De Rossi did precisely the right thing the other day in the Roma match by telling the referee he’d knocked the ball in with his hand. Good for you, Daniele. And FIFA, who spouts on and on about their Fair Play initiative, has not a word about it on their site in the news section. Hmmm. Go Figure.

On the other hand, you can’t help but laugh at the original hard man, Paolo DiCanio, who had this rebuttal. I’m sure that if it wasn’t a Roma player who’d made and retracted the goal, he’d have a bit of a different response but so be it. Try decaf Paolo, try decaf.

Nowadays soccer is polluted by money, violence, racism and cheaters… When are we going to start looking at rugby for some of its values.

The initiative taken by De Rossi is important to underline. This also can close the mouth of a lot of supporters who believe that italian players are all cheaters and players who fall every five seconds. Well Done De Rossi. May you inspire a lot of players !!!

Didn’t DiCanio once pass up shooting on an open net because of an injury?

The “rebuttal” link didn’t work for me…
