Callups for Switzerland Friendly

August 8th, 2009 | By: Julian | 40 Comments »

Few minor changes but nothing huge:

Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Marchetti (Cagliari)
Defenders: Bocchetti (Genoa), Cannavaro (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Genoa), Grosso (Olympique Lyon), Santon (Inter), Zambrotta (Milan)
Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), D’Agostino (Udinese), Marchisio (Juventus), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pepe (Udinese), Pirlo (Milan)
Forwards: Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Quagliarella (Napoli), Rossi (Villarreal)

Criscito and Marchisio get their first call ups, and Toni is noticeably absent (geez am I good or what?). Nice mix of younger guys and experienced players here.

Game takes place on Tuesday.

A little better, but still needs to go a bit further with the axe. But like it was said, August friendlies and La Nazionale do not usually mean to much

Let’s see…

Bitching about lack of Roma players… check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check.

Bitching about lack of ex-Roma players… check.

No forced discussion of great or semi-good Juventus players past, present and future from the Juventus Advertising and Pogrom Committee – hmmm.

No Roma/Juventus supporters – including blog writer – laughing/writing disparaging things about the inclusion of a good Inter player – hmmm.

Must be summer vacation time.

Very glad no Roma players are going. Although would like to see Curci brought up sometime so as back up keeper.

I agree with you Marco. Lippi contradicting himself big time, I think he has something big time personal against Cassano, this is not the way to do business. When I first read the squad I laughed a lot when I saw Di Natale, Palombo, Zambrotta and Pepe. I really wanted to see Cassano, Giovinco, Aquillani, Motta , etc. Italia has good talented players, but does Mr. stuborn, stupid ego minded Lippi realizing that? DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! ciao Italia…

Yes Where is Pazzini? I’ll tell you what coaches like Lippi do. They half willingly give shots to players they don’t really want on the team. in this case Pazzini even though he should be a fixture on this team, was half willingly put in here based on his performance, but more importantly to stuff it to Cassano. He scores, so lippi rewarded him stating against Ireland. In that match he gets a red card, and so lippi has stuffed him. Yes he was given a shot against northern ireland, but that was in response to the media saying “GO WITH A YOUNNGER TEAM”

For my money, the following people should be off of this team forever: Camronesi, Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Pepe, Palombo, GIlardino, Di Natale.

The following people should come on in their place:
Marco Motta, Antonio Cassano, Pazzini, Foggia, Aquafresca, De Ceglie (marchisio is good this guy is better) – Also bring back DeRossi and Gattuso.

For me Gattuso needs to be in this line up. Especially if Pirlo is there, but also because of his work ethic. We need a hustler on this team.

If they go with even half of these changes for the world cup we are golden grams. But one this this team is missing again is a trequartista able of distributing the ball. Our midfield is better with D’agostini there, but not where it needs to be, we need to have a monster Foggia.

So, Lippi, you’ve asked where the talent is, and I have just provided to you a list of names. Their not so young, and they aren’t bench warmers (like what juventus have done to giovinco)

@ Michel-Olivier I know what’s your point? I think he should be included on the national team. He is a great impact player and he is a horse capable of making runs, dribbling and holding his position. Although they play different positions, I think Marchisio is great, but I think DeCeglie adds a bit more and should have been included as well on this team.

My biggest thing is that I want the old guys out, and Cassano in. But then again i think thats pretty obvious.

Overall I’m pretty pleased with this squad. It’s got the right mix of experience and youth, though it’s really just the 11 that Lippi puts out that really counts. But this is good.

Assuming Lippi is not completely insane and only left out De Rossi and Marco Motta because of their Roma commitments, then i dont have all to much problem with this squad. The only thing that i would like to see is Giovinco insterted somewhere in there. With this squad we should play something like this

—-Bufon—-
Santon-Canna-GC-Criscito
Marchisio-D’Agostino-Pirlo
—–Rossi—
Iaquinta–Quagliarella

but i think our ideal squad is something like this. (for future reference)

—-Buffon—-
-Motta-Bocchetti-GC-Santon-
-Marchisio-DDR-Pirlo-
—Rossi–Giovinco–
—–Iaquinta—–

MAD, the only person bitching is you. Roma fans are happy not to have their players in a useless friendly. and the only Inter player worthy of being considered is Balotelli … you forget you don’t have any Italian players on your team.

this line-up is a step in the right direction. No Toni (finally). no Gattuso ( he has his uses but is far to slow).

if you want to get rid of Cannavaro, who do you put in there? there is no one better right now.

do we really need Camoranesi still?

i agree Pazzini, Foggia and maybe even Pelissier should be called, and maybe Giovinco instead of Palumbo, but otherwise things are becoming more focused … perhaps a bit too slowly, but better that things are changing.

and Marchisio and DeCeglie are good but not great.

gio- I think Santon deserves a chance. Considering we’re not overflowing with fullbacks, and that he’s pretty damn good, why not call him up?

It’s pretty clear from this hum-drum squad that Lippi is going to stick with a dull 4-3-3 devoid of creative genius and speed. The only players to get excited about really, once again, are Santon and Rossi. Yes, there are a couple of new faces. But that front line is stale. Di Natale. Why do we persist with this guy, when Cassano or Foggia would be ten times more effective in Lippi’s stinking 4-3-3? And why the hell isnt Amauri in this line-up?! I thought he’d sorted out the ‘paperwork’ ages ago.

Lippi’s squad selections make being an Azzuri fan very embarrasing.

But then the problem isn’t even just with Lippi. Teams like Inter and Milan should be buying more Italian talent, exposing them to more first-team (and champions league) football and thrusting them in front of Lippi’s short-sighted eyes. This summer was the perfect opportunity to do that without diminishing the competetiveness of these sides. Milan, Inter or Juve could have given Cassano a platform to shine on, but instead we see them chasing after Huntlaar, Eto, Milito, Deco etc. And what hope for Giovinco when Juve sign Diego to do exactly the same job. As for Roma – the one italian in their attack who could play for us – doesn’t want to!

Who can blame teenagers for joining foreign leagues when they are treated so badly at a domestic and international level.

Again and Again, We think! You think! I think! To me the way things are going to be a complete disaster performance in WC 2010, yes we shall qualify to the WC 2010 I mean it is not a big deal, but what next? I am afraid it will not be a WC to remember, after that Lippi will hand in his resignation then FGIC will search for a coach to retain Italy’s football image of whom will call players that can really represent Italy in most fashion way which is modern football. Lippi is no modern model nor he likes to invest in young talented players, he is a very good tactician but I do not think he understands today’s football e.g. conduct a survey by asking the Top-10 European coaches: would they consider calling a player like Cassano to their national team? The answer is Yes more than No. One more issue to discuss which is Giovinco, if I wear him I would focus playing abroad better than to be in bench watching games, Italian football needs to invest in such talented players so they are great assets to the Azzuri and that is one of the biggest obstacles in Italian football other than Lippi being the national coach. Both hand in hand are destroying the Italian young talent which there are numerous players. Yes I think and You think but what does the Italian Football thinks?!

A 4-2-3-1 with a midfield of Pirlo and D’Ago would sure be interesting. Such similar playing styles, are they going to be a match made in heaven, or not work out like Pirlo and DDR?

Foggia should be called up as an additional winger, and even Giovinco could be a great player on the left for the team. The wing is a demanding position which would need some good subs. And after the Confeds Cup, I’ll give Pepe one last shot. He may turn into a decent player.

Cassano, I won’t talk, but he is the dream trequar in that formation.

And striker wise, Pazzini would be great. Iaquinta deserves maybe one more shot, but I’m fed up with him. Otherwise, who else could possibly be a striker alone up top? We’re really lacking talent there, maybe its time for some “freshwater” ehhh? lol.

after the game last night, i think its about time iaquinta was dropped from the squad, four goals in 32 games? what a joke. pazzini would make a great lone striker with perhaps rossi (who played really well) playing just behind him. check out http://www.football-italia.info, just been on it and there is a lot of blogs on point sharing a lot of peoples views in this forum.
