Back to the drawing board
What a day. Three red cards, an own goal, endless mocking from my US citizens and I lost my internet connection for almost 24 hours. I don’t know which caused me more pain. hah.) Be that as it may….
We always hear coaches say that “each game in the group phase is a final. Our team will essentially play three ‘final’ games in the group phase.” Never has that been more true than now; Italy had all of last night to rue their chances and they must regroup to focus on a Czech side that’s pretty disappointed and angry right now. I don’t want to talk much more about yesterday– other than to say if not for Kasy Keller, Italy would have six points. He deserves most of the credit the US gets. Buteverything that could be said has been said, and no coach has a realistic “nine versus ten” strategy in their tactics book, so put that result aside.
It’s clear that somebody other than Pirlo needs to step up. I hope that Lippi seriously considers putting Del Piero in the starting eleven for Thursday as he seemed to be one of the few individuals trying anything creative. We’ll probably see a big dose of Camo as well, and that’s fine by me.

De Rossi miss-behaved, he is too hot-headed and he payed for it. But he recognized his error. He even apologized to Mcbride after the game, not an easy thing to do after such a heated match.
Boo, a tackle from behind is as bad, and could even be worse than an elbow in the head. It is not just ”playing rough”, in fact FIFA defines any tackle from behind as a red card. It is just as dirty and carries the same bad intention than elbowing someone. And the US players hitted the italian players a little too much, dont say they ”dived”, as perrotta and gilardino came out injured and risk the next game.
the second half foul on perrotta was not even sanctioned. in fact, he got hit and in that same action the US showed what ”fair play” is to them: they kept the ball inside, and score a goal that was correctly disallowed. mcbride was bleeding after he got hit, however he is fine and will feature against ghana. if de rossi would have charged angrily against his head, mcbride would have been KO. He just jumped with his elbow high, and hit mcbride who jumped next to him. also note that in the italian league jumping with your elbow high is very common.

When the Italians scored off of the free kick, my worst (American fears were realized).
I predicted to my friends that our revamped lineup would give us a better un of play in the midfield and we would have several chances during the game. I also thought that italy would only need one (or half!) a chance and would score. I’m glad it worked out how it did (minus all the hytrionics over the rough play). Go Italy – Beat Czech! Go USA – beat Ghana!

Let’s not dignify Boo’s assertions with any kind of response. Not a single one is rooted in fact and his lone example from Korea 2002 is perfectly irrelevant. It is, in fact, typical of his recent posts, characterised by the most base and uninformed reasoning that I have seen on this board since I began posting a month ago. All bigotry is wrong, but Boo’s is also plain stupid.

Forza –
It would have taken alot to KO McBride. Much of his head and face is already titanium. The play, even if not intentional, met the criteron for serious foul play (eg excessive force and/or intent to injure).
What many USMNT supporters are arguing is that neither US card met the criteron for Serious foul play. There was no intent to injure on either play (in fact, Pope knocked the ball away before the flo.. eh, fall), and neither was all that excessively violent. No one, AFAIK has claimed the first US Red wasn’t a foul. It just wasn’t excessively violent. Late and reckless? It was and it was deserving of a booking. The ref’s mistake (among many) was to go directly to red.
On Pope’s trip, it seems the ruling could have been a repeated violation, perhaps, and that’s a cautionable offense. This still sits poorly with many Americans because the first caution was a flop.
And please don’t talk about number of fouls. Italian soccer shoes should come with training wheels. That might help keep their wearer’s upright.

Mason, its no use discussing this, I wont agree with you, you wont agree with me. But I think neither team was ‘exemplary’ in terms of sportsmanship, specially DeRossi for the elbowing (no words for that), and the US player that continued a play with an italian man, Perrotta, on the ground, and he was seriously hit, he had to continue injured, and now risks to miss the next game – the player that tackled him knows that he hitted him, hard…
Both teams suffered refereing mistakes. I didnt watch the game a second time, and when I saw it the first time I wasnt cool headed, but I thought Mastroeni’s tackle from behind was a deserved red, as fifa defines a tackle from behind as a red card as I said before. I dont know about pope and the second yellow, i thought it was a foul, and the comentator said the referee was doing a good job for such a complicated game (south american, so he was neutral). I saw a couple plays stopped for offside against Italy, about 10 of them, and at least 2 were not offside(commentator agreed, but didnt give much importance to it), which would have left the forward alone against the ‘keeper. DeRossi apologized to mcbride after the game, and he accepted the apologies. It was a very heated match, both teams did everything to win, including those that break what we call fair play.
That said, is time to end this discussion. Now the teams need to analyze mistakes and prepare for the decisive match, both will have a tough job. I hope that Italy beats the czecs to top the group, and that the US takes advantage of this, beats Ghana and advance too. Good luck to both our teams!

The three red cards were well deserved. De Rossi act was voluntary. Mastroiani tackle was very late, from behind and could have severly injured Pirlo. Pope was late and missed the ball during an offensive play of the Italians so the yellow card was deserved (he got a yellow card not a red so there is no contestation possible).
It was a shamefull match for our team because of the lack of creativity and dangerous play. Nothing else needs to be underlined.
Wrong decisions from Lippi were made as Camoranesi should have entered at the place of Perrota and Inzaghi at the place of Gilardino (who scored but didn’t do anyhting else). At least Toni held the ball and obtained fouls. Tott’s substition was however intelligent as he got an early booking and seemed ready to get sent off before the end of the first half.
Now lets concentrate on the Czechs

what a total dissapointment.watching the famous blues on sunday morning took me back to the past years following the glorious azzurri at italia 90, usa 94, france 98 and korea japan 2002.i still clearly remember the events that have shaped my football history such as that infamaous baggio miss, the Di Biagio miss in 98 & the disaster of 2002.i honestly love & wish the azzurri all the success but after the game im shocked, at a loss to explain what happened..sit back & wait for the counter.take me back 20 years & this is what we see.time to turn the shambles & mentality around.

Lang, Forza
Yes yes, all kinds of unfortunate acts are committed by all players, in all nations. And yes, tackles from behind are of course automatic red cards. Even those, however, are often committed when defenders are beaten and have no other option but to break up the play. In those cases many players do not display any intent to commit serious harm.
High tackles? There’s simply NO justification for them, at all. And if you look at the elbows thrown in 2002, and then this last game game, well you have to wonder whether these are isolated events, or something more insidious. Obviously, I’d say there’s a pattern here, and you’ve got to give the High Tackle trophy to the azzurri. Again, shame really…the azzurri really ought to play at their level, not sink beneath it.

Very bad game for Italy, nor did the USA show anything interesting. Put it this way, the US team took 4 goals in two games, and they scored none since it was an auto-goal.
Let’s cheer up we have 4 points and rank 1st of the group. Let’s put the game and that US team behind us.
In 1982 we ended up world champion after 3 draws in the first round.
Forza Azzuri!!

We need Del Piero on the field as long as possible . forget the past few WC , I have a feeling he will be the italian heroe in this WC. he shows the hunger and willingness to bring the Cup home.

Boo, Italians are nasty, we are cheaters, that’s our nature we can’t help it. In 2002 we committed the worst crimes humanity has ever seen, brutality and things like that. It’s ok? Let’s talk about something else now, your comments are becoming a pain in the as.s

USA was scared from the start, everytime luca touched the ball was a foul. what De Rossi did was good, Its a “war” right? it was sad to see USA Playing like that, what a shame.

Boo
your empirical observations regarding team Italia commiting egegious fouls is totally unfounded as the Azzurri generally have one of the lowest totals of any team in the tournament which has been a consistent pattern over the years.
In fact the 1994 WC in which they reached the final against Brazil they committed the least number of fouls of any team in the tournament that advanced to the final round.
After removing your blinders review the tapes and see how many fouls were committed against Italian players especially their forwards from behind undercutting their legs which is extremely dangerous and recall the vicious elbows thrown against Del Piero and Pirlo during the Ghana match which sent them reeling to the pitch but was never called by the ref.
Finally your ethic stereotyping, vitriol and denigrating remarks about Italians or any other country participating in the tournament is repugnant and speaks volumes about you as a person.

The world has power house teams like Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Italy amongst other very good teams.
For those teams like the United States that are trying to prove themselves, they need to do everything they can CONSISTENT with the way other teams play to show that they can compete.
If the power house teams tug, dive, act, and clip, how can teams like the US compete unless they do the same?
Let the power house teams SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF CLASS and call out teams like the US for playing at a lower level of class for competing inconsistently with the standard.
Otherwise, there is nothing really to celebrate when your power house teams play tug, dive, act, and foul, and say, “Well everyone else is doing it!”

I am still wondering who dived in the last 2 games against Ghana and USA. I didn’t notice all this diving. The only thing I can remember is Asamoah Gyan diving 2 times inside the italian box searching for a penalty and I can recall that Perrotta and Gilardino got injured after USA game…well they are actors, maybe the went on acting 2 days after the game.

Hey Switzerland stay neutral. Are you trying to scare me boo.
Listen to the Greek. Italy will win. The Czechs will be running scared. booooooooo.

why isn’t camaronessi playin? he is th hardest workin mid on this italian team and he dosen’t start…. Perrotta is the worst player i have ever seen and if italy dosen’t give him a seat on the bench ther world cup hopes will drop alot

boo, how do the italian’s dive more then any other team?? I’m sorry but there is some bad blood towards the italians here.

boo i have to say one thing…switserland is the most diving, fouling, crapy team ever. if you watch any of there games you will see that and i could BET 100000000000000 dollars on it

Del Piero is the best, he should start next match and show everyone.
