A lot of Pizza

June 22nd, 2006 | By: Jay | 46 Comments »

According to AGI, the Milanese are big fans of ‘the pie’ during World Cup matches. What does this have to do with anything? Not much, frankly, but I’m burned out from a trip to Miami (where I watched an airport full of Argentinians gnash their teeth over a draw with Netherlands) and its getting late. Anyway, fellow tifosi… good luck to all of us utomorrow against the Czechs and I’ll check in after the match!

OMG LIPPI IS GOING TO KILL ITALY — HOW CAN HE HAVE TONI OFF AND GILA IN ___ GILA PLAYED SO BAD AND SO DID TOTTI — VERY LUCKY THAT THE CHECHS GOT THE RED OR IT COULD HAVE BEEN BAD NEWS FOR ITALY .. AND WAHT WAS WITH THE EVER SLOW GROSSO AND THEN PUTING BARONE FOR CAMO WHO PLAYED VERY WELL — I THOUGHT LIPPI WAS A GOOD COACH BUT IS PROVING TO BE AMORON AND THE NED OF THE AZZURI

He took camoranesi off because the game was already in hand and he (mauro) is kind of volatile out there (plays very strong)

Grosso played well, which game were you watching?

Totti is non-existant, however, his “name” gave us the second yellow and the red card. If that foul had been on any other player on Italy (except pirlo) he wouldn’t have got the second yello…Fifa tries to protect “the stars”

The scoreline is flattering. Italy still has not really scored within the run of play this world cup. Iaquinta’s and Inzaghi’s goals were nice, but the result of either a horrendous defense mistake, or a team playing at midfield with two defenders. Pirlo off a corner, Gila off a free kick, Materazzi (huh?) of a corner.

I wish we would’ve seen Toni this game instead of Gila. Toni had a great game against Ghana, and Gila hasn’t proven he can hold the ball up like Toni did.

Totti wasted some opportunities today. Cech saw those chips coming a mile away- pass the ball! I thought Perrotta wasted an opportunity, and I didn’t see much from him today. Totti at least did some creative stuff with the ball. Stick with the 4-3-1-2 against a traditional 4-4-2 side. Against a 4-5-1 maybe go with the 4-4-2.

Also, Cannavaro and Buffon, incredible games each. Matrix even made a great tackle, though some of his defending was a bit shaky.

FORZA ITALIA, victory and qualification!
A good game for Italy, things went well for us. Too bad we lost Nesta, but Matrix played the game of his life scoring a goal! The two yellows for the czec player came from two fouls from behind and Fifa makes a rule that a foul from behind is a RED card (minimun yellow!), so I think he deserved to be sent off. However, that penalty given to Ghana in the USA was not a foul. Whatever, we go through hoping to get as far as possible…

Forza Azzurri!

I thought Italy showed how they can play today. This was much improved over the US game. Here are my player ratings:

Buffon: 8 - did everything well, commanded his box, made difficult saves look easy, turned all the long range shots out wide not allowing any dangerous rebounds
Cannavaro: 7 - steady as always, especially w/ Matrix
Matrix: 7 - I can’t believe I was happy to have him out there, that was a towering header and no stupid fouls, although that header back to Buffon with Baros lurking was a bit frightening
Grosso: 7 - defended well all afternoon, made Lippi look a little foolish for dropping him in favor of Zaccardo, I think we have Maldini’s replacement (obviously he’s not Maldini, but he has room to grow)
Zambrotta: 6 - did not get forward as much as normal, but solid
Pirlo: 8 - has been easily Italy’s best player so far, was purposeful out of the back, wish he would have taken that shot rather than chipping for Pippo
Gattuso: 7 - what de Rossi aspires to be, dogged, up and down the pitch, maybe let Nedved get a little too free at times, but he was playing on a yellow (foolishly taken IMO)
Camo: 6 - gave much needed width but I thought his crosses were lacking, should have at least tested Cech with that header off the corner
Perrotta: 5 - pretty anonymous most of the game, ballooned over when I thought he should have crossed for Pippo or Totti who were wide open
Totti: 5 - he’s still not at his best, but you can see it coming, the ideas are all there, but his execution has been lacking - his chips were too short and his thru balls were too slow - IT WILL COME!
Gila: 6 - didn’t see much from him, I thought he was fouled a lot but wasn’t getting calls
SUBS
Pippo: 7 - typical Pippo goal - this is exactly why you bring him along - come on in the 60th minute, run hard, create space, pester the defenders - wasn’t offsides on that first ball through, should have scored on that header or the deflection that left him in alone with Cech
Barone: N/A, was not really on long enough to garner a rating, but he was praying that Pippo played him that square ball so he could get the clincher, but always good to see another Rosanero player on the Azzurri
Nesta: N/A, I know he wasn’t a sub, but he was only on for 16 minutes, even though Matrix scored lets hope Nesta gets fit; there is no classier duo in this Cup than Canna and Nesta

Great Game! Forza Azzurri!

Well Australia was exactly who I DID NOT want to see in this second game. I can see another USA type game, with how physical this team plays. So many fouls in this game, and many more that were not called.

And of course we have to deal with Hiddink again. Ugh. A nightmare. I’d much rather face Croatia, or even Brazil.

Yeah, what was up with that????

I think he was saying to him, “I told you to put in Inzaghi” cuz it was right after the goal.

Man, we are easily through to the quarterfinals (australia is good, but they should be outclassed against italy) and then we play (most likely) SK or Ukraine.

Things are looking good for italy

Lippi was asked about the “Gattuso chock” and he jokingly said that it was typical of “le carezze di Gattuso” (”the caresses of Gattuso”). Gattuso is intense but that’s what we love about him.

I was very impressed by the way the Azzurri played today. The Czech Republic may have been without their potency up front, but that does not explain Italy’s midfield dominance. Finishing needs to improve, but if you were to tell me that we’d advance 2-0 over the Czechs without Toni in advance, I would have been beyond joy.

The team played with Italian joy and spirit. Materazzi put forth a storming performance today. Not only was the goal clinically taken, but his tackling in the back, particularly closing down Nedved in the final third, was phenomenal. Having Nesta out for the game against Australia will be a huge blow, but witnessing Materazzi’s performance today will surely ease some tensions.

As for Totti, some of what has been said about him has been a bit harsh. He put a hard, low strike on target that would have beaten 9 out of 10 keepers at the World Cup, and had it beaten Cech, nobody would be questioning his inclusion in the side. The lob shots look terrible when the don’t come off, but are they so much worse than a fierce strike high or wide? He played fine and Lippi must keep faith as Italy need him if they are to progress to the latter stages of the tournament.

Camoranesi was a disaster today, let’s not be blinded by the win. Every pass he attempted hit a Czech or he lost the ball entirely. They played Pirlo back and this was a mistake, because he is far more effective forward where he can deliver quality service, unlike Camoranesi’s disasterous passes.

The problem with victory, it masks the flaws and I suspect Camoranesi will get a start the next game, at the expense of another striker. He is horrible.

We lack some killer instinct.
About individuals:
Cannavaro: what a player, maybe the best centre back in the world at the moment.
Camoranesi: didn’t like the way he lost the ball several times.
Pirlo: not his best game but is standard is stil high
Totti: he has been asked: why all those lobs? Cause my mind told me so..quite a good answer I think he is coming back, at least i hope so.
Still I hope Toni will be field against Australia.

Paul, I agree with you here. I hope Nesta is back for the Australia game. Materazzi will make those mental mistakes and it could cost them next time. He scored a great goal though.

Once again, Perrotta did nothing.

Camo was garbage in that match. He couldnt complete a pass. Totto was garbage too and i sure hope he starts getting better, we need is genius to provide the final ball. Gattusso get an A, Buffon A+ Cannavaro A+, Materrazi made 1 mistake so A. Peratto i dont know what 2 give him because i didnt see him. Grosso B. Zambrotta B+. Nesta A. Pippo B wasted a couple.Gilo like Perrota. Pirlo A good passing. Totti F. Camo F.
