2010: What’s Your Approach?
So with WC 2010 just around the corner, we all have an idea of what’s going on. Marcello Lippi loves old men: he loves the cougars, and he doesn’t wanna give any of the “sorority girls” a try on the pitch. The youngins had a great showing at the U-21 Euros, and some of the players are ready to break into the senior side.
With this, I ask for you guys to form an open discussion. What would be your approach to 2010?

- Build the strongest squad possible combining youth and veterans
(Take the Confed. Cup Squad, drop a few guys, and bring in some U-21)
- Try and build a young squad to have them gain experience for 2014, admitting that 2010 is a rebuilding year
(Ditch most of the Confed. Cup Squad and bring in more U-21)
- Go with the Bearzot ‘86 approach and keep most of the players from the ‘06 title team
(Keep the Confed. Cup Squad and bring in some more vets like Totti, Nesta, Inzaghi etc.)
- Bring a squad of only proven Serie A players, ditch any veteran under performers or unproven youth)
(Only call up guys like Floccari, Foggia, Brighi, D’Agostino, Pellissier, etc.)

It’s your squad! What are you gonna do?

Sofia, he shouldn’t be playing for the Nazionale until he’s starting for Juve. Given Diego’s arrival, he won’t be at WC2010.

Sofia, I’ve seen enough Juve-games this season. And Alessio just said what I was trying to say: until he proves he’s a commanding player at Juve, he shouldn’t be anywhere near the Azzurri.
And Ale also pointed out the other thing I was aiming for. I don’t understand people wanting to play Lyon-benchwarmer Grosso (yes I know, he has done a great job in the past, but he’s past his prime) or an unproven kid like Santon in a world cup. I’ve seen good things from Motta, but when you’re looking for a LB and RB, there were no better Italian players this season than Cassani and Balzaretti. And if you think that’s bullshit, try watching some of their games.

Revised
Buffon
De Ceglie Chiellini Criscito Santon
Marchisio De Rossi Pirlo
Cassano
Rossi Pazzini
Bench
G: Abbiati, Curci
D: Grosso, Santacroce, Motta
M: Nocerino, Giovinco, D’Agostino, Brighi
S: Miccoli, Del Piero, Acquafresca

hmmm… Amauri maybe?

Steven, I understand that Giovinco needs to “prove his worth” at Juve, however, it is kind of sad he isn’t getting the chance to and therefore causing everyone to underestimate him.
I don’t think Grosso should be in the starting XI he would be great for the bench in case someone gets injured? Santon may have just burst onto the Nazionale recently but by the time the WC comes I’m sure he will have more experience under his belt so don’t count him out yet.
As far as players like Balzaretti, you are forgetting he used to play for Juventus in Serie B, so actually I watched him every match (that he played). I think he has talent, but I also think that by 2010 Santon will be ready.

We need youth at both LB and RB for sure.
You can have Nesta or Canna at CB if you have youth and speed on the flanks and a good covering CB like DDR or maybe Marchisio.
I think Totti/Cassano and Pazzini would be great upfront as well

honestly if Gio really wanted to go to WC2010, he should have moved to team like Villarreal…..he would have got lots of minutes there….the Left Wing position….rotates between Pires/Ibagaza……and they are both old and don’t play full games…………….
Villareal formation ends up as 4-2-4 going forward……..and 4-1-3-1-1 defending….
Plus he would have made more money in Liga as he would only pay 24% withholding/tax on his salary (becks law for foreign players for the first 5 year)

Sophia, Serie B was three seasons ago. Can’t compare that. Trust me, I’d love for Santon to become the new superman, but he still has to prove he can handle the pressure.

Steven, I am (obviously) aware that Serie B was three seasons ago, but I watch as many Serie A matches as Canadian television allows me to. So I have seen his matches this season as well. Well, Santon still has a a year to shape up, so I guess we will see.

About Gio, He absolutely should have moved. The guy is being wasted at Juventus. Even if he went to a Roma, Fiorentina, Udinese he would have had a serious amount of playing time. Juve seems to have some sort of broken system of playing their guys. Just a thought. I do hope DeCeglie and Giovinco get ample playing time this year, maybe Ferrara is different from Ranieri, who knows. One thing is certain, if Giovinco plays as much as he did this season he will not be going to the world cup.
And for those who doubt the kid, let me explain something. He was poorly treated last season, lacked confidence in many of his games, and was afraid to make a mistake and be benched for 10 games. I would argue he was the most poorly treated player at juventus. When he looks at a guy like Messi, whose making all this money and running a team like barca I wonder how he feels? The guy, for my money has about the same amount of talent as Messi – if not more.

Even if he went to a Roma, Fiorentina
Ask Romanistas what they think of Spalletti’s youth policy. And Fiorentina? Like Pazzini and Osvaldo?
Serie B was 3 seasons ago and Balzaretti is now the best left-back in Italy, Cassani is the best right-back. They are at the right age, not too young, not too old, they should be starting fullbacks for the Azzurri. Last we started a Palermo left-back, it went pretty well. (Ignore Zaccardo)

Such a wide swing of opinions.
One guy, carlo I think, is thinking of using Santon at both fullback positions.
A couple of people are thinking that he shouldn’t be on the squad at all.

The last Palermo left-back scored the goal of the tournament.

The team (if we qualify which is definately not a certainity if Lippi persists with the same stale team) to the 2010 world cup must be a mix of youth and experience. Only the goalkeeping position is settled without any other contender.Buffon will overcome the hicupps and loss of form/injury he suffered in 2008/2009 season..The full backs must be definately santon and Motta/De Ceglie( If De Ceglie has a great season with Juve, he must be there)..Out of oldies, only Grosso must be taken as a full back to South Africa(if we qualify). Zambrotta is a liabilty , he cant defend any more and he is slow..as for full backs, sadly, Canna will be there along with Chiellini..Hopefully Santacroce will have a great season with napoli and will challenge finished canna for the spot..Midfielders will be De rossi, Pirlo, gattusso, DÁgostino, Foggia, Aquilani…the strikers again will be a dilemna..Lippi must mix up the strikers according to the match situation and opponents..For example, Guiseppe Rossi looks excellent against tame non technical opponents like USA or N.Ireland ..he must be used against easy group stage opponents to give a rest to our lynch pins..Rossi has never really impressed against top class teams or physical teams8 he was NIL when he played for Villareal against man united or Arsenal and also nothing when he played against Brazil)..cassano must be there if we have any chance chance of going all the way..taking Totti is not a bad idea and also, the usuals iaquinta , Quagliarella will be there..But the worry is that Lippi will persist with finished goods Toni…
if lippi selects Andrea dossena, Palombo, pepe, Toni..in the squad, we will score ZERO goals and will get back home with eggs on our faces

CALLUPS:
Keepers: Buffon, Amelia, Curci
Defenders: Chiellini, Legrottaglie, Cannavaro, Nesta, Santacroce, Maggio, Motta, Criscito, Santon
Midfielders: Camoranesi, Foggia, D’Agostino, De Rossi, Marchisio, Ambrosini, Pirlo, Brighi.
Forwards: Cassano, Del Piero, Rossi, Giovinco, Iaquinta, Pazzini, Amauri.
Starting XI:
————–Buffon
Maggio–Chiellini–Nesta–Criscito
-Camoranesi–De Rossi–Foggia
—————Rossi
———Cassano–Amauri
Also, for a more careful approach, switch Camoranesi and Foggia with D’Agostino and Marchisio. That would also be great. And Nesta only would be starting if he’s still in the form he was in pre-injury, and if not may even lose his callup to Bocchetti. And De Ceglie, Grosso, and Zambrotta will also all be fighting for those fullback positions, but i think Maggio, Motta, Santon, and Criscito will hold them. And lastly, if Amauri is called up by Brazil first, then replace him with Quagliarella or Pelissier.

Oh, and Pepe i think deserves a callup too, actually instead of Ambrosini. He was great in the Confederations Cup, and honestly i just completely forgot about him.

hey, actually i do like Armando´s 23 called up players, only drop the technically useless Criscito for Grosso( he has plenty to offer still, he can set up goals) in the defence, Ambrosini is a great choice, his heading prowess is unparralled actually and his physical presence is a must, Camoronesi is very talented but i cant see him in prime physical form cometh 2010, he is almost finished stamina wise, so take either Aquilani or montolivo instead of him..Strikers wise, again, Armando´s list is almost spot on with a minor exception..I dont think Lippi will pick up Del Piero..Definately, Balotelli must be there in that list, the rest is ok..

Pretty sure that this team would boss 2010. Might not win it. But it would be the best players who can play for italy.
————-Buffon—————
Motta–Cannavaro–Chiellini–Santon
—-De Rossi–Pirlo–Foggia——–
————Cassano—————
——Balotelli – Amauri———
Rest of the squad: Rossi, Camoranesi, Santacroce, Grosso, Giovinco, Pazzini, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Brighi, Aquilani, Amelia.
Positives:
a) It gives scope for plenty of stellar subs from the bench.
b) It has experience through the spine
c) It has plenty of running (particularly with Santon and Foggia overlapping down the flanks)
d) Cassano.
e) The strength, speed and technique in the front two would be unparalleled.
f) Sets the team up for at least 6 years worth of growth and development as we replace Cannavaro, Pirlo etc.
Negatives:
a) Potentially extraordinarily moody and angry. But then again, you can’t start a fire without a spark or two and it’d be entertaining at least!
b) Amauri’s paper work… nearly done now?
c) How to persuade Lippi that he needs Cassano? A move to Inter perhaps?
d) Depends on Cannavaro’s performances in 2009/10. Which could be rubbish.

I read this rather disturbing news in channel 4 site of which Lippi has underlined that and I quote:“I have the hope, I underline hope, to try and win the World Cup again. To do that I need to focus on the players with the most international experience and therefore the 2006 squad.”
Wow amazing really, this man never learns from his mistakes, after the embaressing display of the 2006 squad in the Confederations Cup he still believes in them to lift the World Cup in South Africa 2010. I mean what a character, a stuborn ego coach.

Interesting, I have not heard about this
