At this point, I am more concerned with the WC qualifiers more than anything else. Because, as John Silver stated: ….”too many of these conquests were dreary, hard-won, trudge-in-the-mud affairs, decided more often by luck than by any display of skill – this against such European minnows as Bulgaria and Greece” (I know Greece was a friendly…but John’s point here sums up the perennial problems of the team, in my opinion)

Certainly the Confederation’s Cup will be a valuable opportunity to obervse the climate, stadiums and “feel” of South Africa while hopefully integrating the youngsters and solidfying a tactial identity. Perhaps I am that quintessential Azzurri fan who will not be worried until the players are on the plane to South Africa – but I sure hope Julian is right: that 2008 was a year to set-up things for the future.

I agree, we should at least be able to get out of the group, BUT Italy only seem to perform in games that count. So I wouldn’t put much stock in it. The WC qualifiers , now THAT is what counts!
