18-2-9
That was the record under Marcello Lippi, whose inevitable resignation became official today. 18 wins, nine draws and two losses, the first of which came in his first match at the helm. Fabio Cannavaro said it best: “He leaves the national team as a winner and we can only thank him for his human and professional work in guiding the national team in difficult times.”
He will be missed.
But life, and the Azzurri roll on…will it be Zaccheroni and his “3-4-3″ system who takes over? Donadoni? Gentile should be considered but he’s been the U-21 coach for so long, one wonders if his “window” hasn’t closed.
For those of you who have stuck around (unlike Marcello), we’ll keep posting here periodically and the site should remain fairly active. After all, its never too early to start plotting victory at Euro 2008.

@go football
yes we i think the french are putting this loss behind them as we french fans are: with dignity. I do not think it is necessary to have a rematch for a silly incident like that.

Laura, it is in reference to still seeing posts about Materazzi.
LOL
What I am saying is that there are bigger things to worry about than a Headbutt during a heated Soccer Match.

Natalie,
I think Alfredo is simplay saying he wants to rejoice all over again by playing france when our team is healthier.
But I would hate to see some dumbass lawyer meddle in International affairs.

you know what! If they want to replay the final, let’s do it. With rest and Nesta and Totti healthy, Itlay will run right over them…
Bring them on!

no video replays were used in the world cup… the referee was just on tv and from his mouth to my ear stated that there ARE NO VIDEOS IN THE ENTIRE STADIUM!!! newspapers and internet are ONLY mediocre reports stated by usually biased people!

THATS A GOOD WAY TO PUT IT ! If the match is replayed though … Alfredo wouldn’t be rejoicing … because Italy is to much of a great team ![]()

catherine, you make me feel more confident about this whole situation
Italy would win no matter how many times they replayed the match!

people, people this whole thing is just a publicity stunt. The paris lawyer is just looking to make some quick cash, do you honestly think he gives a rat’s ass about Zidane or the French national team. I remember there was a similar story floating around about replaying the 1994 final as well, it was all bullshit in the end.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SONG WAS PLAYING IN THE STADIUM WHEN THE ITALIANS WERE RECEIVING THEIR MEDALS AND HOISTING UP THE TROPHY ON THE WINNERS STAND? IT SOUNDED LIKE SOME TYPE OF OPERA…VERY NICE!

I have heard Zaccheroni will be the new boss.
Lippi did a good job.
Don’t give him too much credit though.
This year we were very lucky, in past years not so lucky.
If you think back to past tournaments, you really can’t blame the coaching.
We lost to Brazil in 94 in PK’s
In 98, we lost again in PK’s (this time we got our revenge)
And in 02, we were unlucky to go against the host nation and have the ref against us.

Don’t give him to much credit ? … He dserves all the credit he can get!

Lippi is the best coach for Italy, he’ll be a tough act to follow.

Vincenzo my ignorant dear freind,
You don’t know what victory is. Materazzi had brought shame upon the Italian soccer team. You obviously have no clue what you are celebrating, the exploits of a shameless chest pincher.
My sincere advice is to stop backing your beloved hero Materazzi, you are doing a greate disservice to your country.
Long live France and Italia!
Peace,
Kruman

@go football
hmmm…you may be right…conspiracies are not unheard of in these days.

This blog is about Lippi’s departure but thought it might be interesting to hear what the ref had to say about the Zidane - Materazzi incident. My translation but I’ve also pasted in the original. I’m curious to hear what Zidane and IA have to say now
In an interview with Argentina’s “Il Clarin,” the ref Horaxio Elizondo confirmed that the red card given to Zidane for the head-butt was pointed out by his 4th man and was not awarded based on television replay.
“The incident happened on another part of the field, far from where I was. When I saw Materazzi on the ground, I stopped the play” said Elizondo. The Ref explains that he realized that something “bad had happened” but adds that “Thuram was telling me that Materazzi was faking, that he was simulating. And Gattuso was like a madman, not against Zidane but against Thuram. Gattuso assured me that he had seen Zidane hit Materazzi” The Ref explains that Zidane did not tell him exactly what happened: “He didn’t tell me that there was a provocation”
After having ref’d the Final, Elizondo is now thinking of retiring. «I’ve reached my goals. Now it’s time to teach what I’ve learnt, and I want to leae from the front door” said the 42 year old Argentinian

«Ho raggiunto i miei obiettivi. Ora è tempo di insegnare ciò che ho imparato - ha detto il 42enne argentino -, voglio lasciare dalla porta principale».

I’m optimistic about the appointment of Donadoni. I like that he’s young and hope this means he will be inclined to continue in the Lippi vein.
