10-Nil and Must Win Games: Another Azzurri Day

July 18th, 2008 | By: Julian | 12 Comments »

10-nil was the score by which the Azzurri Olympic team beat Buggiano in a friendly match. Hey, 10-nil is always an impressive score but this game might’ve been a little too easy. According to that daily-calcio.com, our Olympic Azzurri team (We’ll call it the OAT from now on) beat “a representative side from the Tuscan commune”. So I’m not even sure this was a legit soccer team. But, again, 10 nil? I’ll take that, even in a friendly against nobodies. Acquafresca had a hat-trick, and both Rossi and Montolivo scored twice. Giovinco, Rocchi and Dessena round up the scoresheet. Even more impressive is that during the course of the game, virtually the entire lineup was changed and the subs were just as efficient as the starters. So we’ve got depth and youth. The Azzurri should be set for the next 10-15 years.

Italy-England in the UEFA 2009 Championships
And our U-19 team isn’t doing too shabby either. They drew 0-0 with England in the U-19 Championships. There’s only one game left in group stages, and the Azzurrini have to win in order to go through. We need to beat the Czechs in order to go through, and that’ll be pretty tough considering they’re hosting the tourney. But then again, they did draw with Greece.

In terms of other news… Ronaldinho is officially at Milan (though this news is kinda old, since we’ve heard rumors about it back in oh, March of 1826) and Guily left Roma for more playing time at PSG.

And last entry I promised that I would post who I thought would be crucial in getting us through the Olympics. Here’s who I think are the top 5 guys who have what it takes to drive the team to success. And to make it more interesting, I’ll list them in order of increasing importance:
Criscito
Abate
Acquafresca
Montolivo
And finally, the number 1 guy the Azzurri need to be at the top of his game, the most talented of the bunch and the biggest hope for the future:
Giovinco (shocker)

Julian, glad you think Abate will be a difference maker.
U-19 draw with England is not bad, but the team’s biggest issue right now is scoring, so let’s hope they have better luck with next game against the Czechs. If we don’t manage to be among the top finisher, we miss the chance of qualifying to the 2009 u-20 world cup.

I could not agree more about Abate, every time he came on the pitch in toulon the pace of the game quickened. He absolutely flew down the wings, he is who most impressed me that tournament.

Heh, kinda odd scoring is an issue. With guys like Rossi, Gio, Acqua, and Rocchi we should be cranking out goals

Julian,I was talking about the u-19 championship. With the AOT as you call it,I’m sure we will have no problems scoring goals.

I just hope Abate gets his chance at Milan as well, and this tournament will go a long way in doing that.

How can you not include Rossi on that list? Giovinco without Rossi is not nearly as effective, as witnessed in the Toulon tournament, whereas Rossi can be brilliant with or without Giovinco. And I think Rossi is just as talented a supporting striker as Giovinco is a fantasista.

I agree Bashar, Rossi should be joint #1 with Giovinco.
