The Don Names The Squad, Batshit Crazy Phenomenon In Tow
I’ll start out by saying Roberto Donadoni has bigger grapefruits than I ever gave him credit for. Or perhaps his job security is a bit better now, enabling him to throw caution to the wind and bring the most gifted Italian not named Francesco Totti despite him being a batshit crazy motherfucker. Ladies & gents…….
CASSAAANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If he stays sane, Italy just won the group. The man is just that good. However, if he has a meltdown, we’re all in for a long (or short) tournament. So would any psychiatrists in the house please get to Swissaustria ASAP with a readymade crazy cocktail for Mr. Cassano.
It’s a 24 man squad, which means there’s one more name to be dropped, and I don’t think too many would argue Cassano is on probation. All you need is to look at his games against Torino and Fiorentina this year for evidence.
The rest of the squad? Standard.
Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Livorno), Morgan De Sanctis (Sevilla)
Defenders: Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Christian Panucci (AS Roma), Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Fabio Grosso (Lyon)
Midfielders: Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)
Forwards: Luca Toni (Bayern Munich), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Marco Borriello (Genoa), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria, on loan from Real Madrid)
A little taste of things to come, hopefully:

last satuday, coca cola was shooting an advertisement about the italian team in euro 2008 right in the street where i live. they were playing inno mammeli with loud speakers, it echoed all around!!!
i will be cheering for you…..forza italia!!!

Shit, that’s unexpected. And Del Piero is there as well. Donadoni is a born gambler.

montolivo, cassano, and aquilani will have to compete for the last spot.
borriello is out of form same for marco matrix, he should of take pippo zaghi and gamberini. After that the squad is perfect.
he will play a 4-3-3 with camoranesi, toni, quagliarella in AT. ambrosini, pirlo, gattuso in MD. zambrotta, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Grosso in DF.
final italy vs germany

Ambrosini and Gattusso ahead of De Rossi? Are you kidding? De Rossi has been the best midfielder in Italy this season.

You can’t use “Phenomenon” or some variation of said word twice in the same day for two different blogs. It cheapens the word. Is that what you stand for, Christobelle?
PS – Sorry if I seem to be “comment stalking” you right now, but I’ve got 1 1/2 hours left till a long weekend, a lot of energy from too many Red Bulls, and quite a few suppressed opinions as a result of being married and having to keep things to myself. And it’s not just you, I even put a comment on the Beckham player blog…

Yeah, what’s up with you? You’ve taken offense to absolutely everything I’ve said today.

Also, arguments lose all validity when you hyperlink. That’s in the Ten Commandments of internet posting. Plus you’re docked cool points.

I love all the selections, if i were picking for the euro’s i would bring the same squad.
Nice job Donadoni

Nice job donadoni! Now we can unleash the animal… Antonio “Cant’t touch this” Cassano. He he, out of control but he’s damn good u must admit. He has the killer instinct, put him together with Toni and the great playmakers Pirlo and Camo… watch out!!

I personally cannot wait to see El Bibe Di Bari in a blue shirt all over again. For those of you who care to remember when Antonio scored against Bulgaria in 2004 only to realise this meant nothing, the tears he shed proved that Italia truly is in his heart. No doubt his temperament is questionable, but neither is his ability or his desire. Would the English be having this conversation if Wayne Rooney was a maybe / maybe not choice. We’ve all seen Rooney’s temperament (and believe me, i’m not comparing the 2 in terms of ability) but no English manager would have any doubt as to his inclusion in a squad. On the Del Piero point, I have to say i’m slightly more perplexed. Having danced and cried with joy after the semi final win over Germany and subsequent 4th star, i would like to remember Alex as someone who just made it into that team and done their bit for the glory of the azzurri. 2 years on, irrespective of the season he has had, this maybe one tournament too many and dare I say it, but those insults levelled at him post Euro 2000 final against France may well resurface. I hope not and I pray Italia bring more glory back to Roma.
Forza Italia, Forza Azzurri!!!!

Hi Guys, what do you think about this formation ?
Buffon
Grosso – Cannavaro – Barzagli – Zambrotta
De Rossi – Pirlo – Gattuso
Di Natale – Cassano
Toni

(see my previous post about formation)
Here, Pirlo plays more advanced position as a game maker supported by ball-winner forces of De Rossi and Gattuso. Di Natale and Cassano play wider role in the left and right flank, respectively.

Hey Calcio, I was talking with my dad about the formation and I had the almost excat same one. I had Chiellini instead of Grosso. We know that Don goes with a 4-3-2-1 formation. It’s insteading to see where Del Piero will play.

Anybody think Christian Maggio should have been on the team? Maybe over Panucci. I would have like to see Raffaele Palladino too, but he hasn’t been playing much.

I like the formation calcio but camronessi should be included perhaps di natale 1st choice of the bench in fornt of del piero n fabio q.

Agreed Mike. I love your formation Calcio, but mine would have Camoranesi instead of Di Natale. I don’t get why people love him so much, he’s not that great. Camro’s done it before in the WC, so let him start.
I want to see some more hair cutting this June after winning the final!!!

And Maggio has played great this season, I mean GREAT. But a big tourney like this one isnt a great time to have him debut.

Old Man Panucci? Ambrosini? Total wastes of spots…

Buffon
Grosso – Cannavaro – Barzagli – Zambrotta
Gattuso
Pirlo – De Rossi
Camoronesi
Del Piero
Toni
and i dont know what Donadoni thinks about player swapping, but maybe for the Romania game he could have Panucci, and/or Chiellini, and/or Ambosini, and/or Di Natale, and/or Cassano try it out, but the 11 above should be the starters. (in my opinion. however, he’ll prob. favor Di Natale over DP, and maybe Chiellini over Grosso. i dunno)

Buffon – Chiellini Cannavaro barzagli Zambrotta – De Rossi Pirlo Camoranesi Cassano(playmaker)- Del Piero Toni
Che espettacolo
I guess from this team at least Buffon, Cannavaro, De Rossi, Pirlo, Cassano, Del Piero, Toni will be in the top 35 France Football list. I don´t khow about Cassano because he play´s for Samp but, no doubt, he deserves to be in that list.
What do you guy´s think?
